Ginny I am so deeply sorry for your loss and hope you know that despite the loss of contact since Hersh passed, you and John were very close to my heart and the hearts of my kids. I am sorry we didn't have the chance to say goodbye but I know John wouldn't have wanted a fuss. I hope that wherever John and Hersh are now they are having endless and wonderful conversations pontificating on everything and anything. They were a pair, weren't they? Much love to you. I'm so thankful you reached out to Sam. My number is 609-605-5790.

I attended South Philadelphia High School from 1966-1969. Mr. DiFiori was my 10th grade Biology teacher. He was interesting, caring, and had a sense of humor that seemed to draw even the most disgruntled student close to him. I will always remember him fondly. May he rest in peace knowing he made a positive difference in the lives of others.

My sincere condolences on John's passing. I taught with John at Southern from 1966 to 1972. A nicer gentleman and more professional educator can not be found. I can only imagine how precious he was to his friends and family.

I am deeply saddened by John's passing. I cycled with John for a little over 10 years and spent hours on the bike talking with him and even hours talking (mostly listening) after the rides in the parking lot. He told me stories of bike trips that he went on, backpacking and canoeing trips. He was my mentor and taught me all about cycling and how to be a responsible cyclist. He always had kind words to say about everyone and was truly a renaissance man. John will be deeply missed.

J.P.,
Your Dad should have written a 'How to" book on the Art of Conversation. You and I became good friends in high school and your father welcomed me into his world from the jump. He would always inquire about the interests of others and then ask genuine questions to have that person talk about themselves. He was eager to learn more...always intellectually curious. Then, 10's of minutes later, he would say with quiet confidence and a warm smile that he too was a wrestler way back in the day, as I was. The conversation would go on forever and you were sorry when it ended. In each encounter with him, he always had pearls of wisdom to share or a funny anecdote.
It was nice to see he kept in touch with former students. Some in a mentor-student relationship. It doesn't surprise me after these 35 plus years. Teaching was not an 8-5 job for him. It was an all the time thing. You could say he was the embodiment of the old adage, "you remember your high school teachers and your college friends". He connected with people in a positive way that formed them into the adults they are today. His legacy is not just a great family, but, his students who are better having met him.
My condolences to Ginny, John and all the DiFiori's. Your loss is heaven's gain. God bless you, Mr. D.! You're the best!

I was so saddened to read John's obituary in today's philadelphia inquirer. I knew John from OCSJ and road with him in South Jersey for many years albeit it has been some time since I last saw John out on a ride. It was always special to ride with John and I know we will all miss him.

My heart felt condolences to the family. He was my biology teacher at South Philly High from 1974 to 1976. I remember the very day told me that he was recommending to attend the South Philly High/Thomas Jefferson Medical Program for urban youth. I jumped at the opportunity and yy mother was so proud. It kept me of the streets of South Philly and really shaped my life for years to come. I'm now a retired U.S. Marine. He was a really great guy.
