I first met John Nyce when I was nine years old and he was the Pack Leader for Cub Scout Pack 7 at Germantown Boys' Club.
Mr. Nyce later worked with Mr. Charles A. Gottsabend, the original Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop #7 Mr. Charles Gottsabend, along with other great volunteers including Auggie Petrucci, John Pigeon, Joe Kendra and Mike Gillespie.
Troop #7 was one of the oldest troops in BSA
Mr. Nyce also assisted Mr. Robert Riggs with the Lenni Lenape indianlore group at GBC and later with the Aztec group.
I am 77 years old now, but I will always remember what a great and kind man he was.
My sympathy to the Nyce family, especially Michael, who was also a GBC and Troop #7 kid. Thank you for sharing your father with so many other kids.

I am very sorry to hear about your dad. I did not know him personally but I have heard a lot about him.I know the Boys Club was thriving when I went there in early 70's. Your dad took over the club in the tougher years when the neighborhood changed and after the fire. Your Dad did the tough work and kept the club viable during the difficult years. I know he touched the lives of many children. The Club would never have survived without the dedication of Mr. Nyce. Selfless people like your dad are hard to find in the world. I spent many days at the club and it was a big part of my childhood and I am grateful to your dad for keeping it going. You should be very proud of your dad. Best regards Rick Austin

Yes, I knew your father. What a great man he was, so generous of
spirit.
I knew you too, Mike, but it has been many years.
My family moved to Germantown in 1955. Our father was in the Army
stationed in France, and we lived there for a few years. We moved into
38 W. Penn Street, right across from the Boys' Club. A year later we
moved around the corner to Coulter Street. My family stayed in that
house until 1969, when they moved to the Northeast. I was married and
in the Army by that time.
As kids, one of the first things my brother Hugh and I did when we
moved to Germantown was to join the Boys' Club. I joined the Cub
Scouts, Pack 7, and Hugh joined the Boy Scouts, Troop 7. Your Dad was
the Pack Leader. When I was old enough, I moved up to the Boy Scouts
too. Mr. Charles Gottsabend was the Scoutmaster. After Mr. Gottsabend
died, Mr. Auggie Petrucci bacame the Scoutmaster - he worked with your
Dad at Heinz dDivision of Kelsey-Hayes over at Front and Olney. Then a
couple of years later, your Dad became the Scoutmaster. That is where I
met you, Mike.
We always had a lot of fun with the Scouts. Your Dad often would take
all us kids camping, most frequently in Tinicum Township or up to Camp
Indiandale.
Your Dad was also very involved for many years as a volunteer with the
Indian group that Mr. Riggs had at the Club. Hugh and I were members
for a number of years.
I saw your Dad at a couple of Boys' Club Reunions, and ran into him a
couple of times through the years, and as many kids as he worked with,
he always remembered me, and always took an interest as I told him
about what I was doing with my file.
They just don't make men like him anymore. All those years of
volunteering! He was so patient with us kids.
I can remember him coming to my house a couple of times as a kid to
cheer me up when I was sick.
Mike, I still have some old snapshots of the Scouts when we were kids,
some with you in them, also Jimmy Jeffries, Robyn Fulford, Michael
Stafford, Mike Russo, John McKillip. Do you remember any of those kids?
I had your Dad on my mind recently, and meant to find out if he was
still living in East Germantown. My intention was to go and see him. I
wish I had followed through.
My sympathy to you and your family.
I hope to see you Friday night in Flourtown, otherwise I will see you
on Saturday morning.

Dear Bill and Jane,
Indeed I am so sorry to hear about Jane's father. I know how she feels but Norm and I are sole survivors of our families. It is so traumatic and final. I will say starting with my little sister, there is not a day of my life that they are not with me constantly. It's never the same, but the closeness is always there and they are never forgotten. God bless you both and Jane's dear father.
Love and prayers,
Mr. & mrs. Pollock
