BERNOCCO
JOSEPH HENRY SR., 89, of 1014 LaSalle Street, Berwick went to his eternal rest on Monday, Feb. 28, 2005 at 1:35 P.M. with his family at his side at Manor Care North in Williamsport, where he was a resident due to a long term illness. He was preceded in death by his devoted and faithful wife Esther, whom he married Oct. 16, 1937 with Rev. Francis P. Albanese, officiating. His skills as an outstanding bricklayer/ mason were well known in the community and by his parish at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Berwick, for his work on the outdoor shrine and fountain, the Rosary walk, and Stations of the Cross. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic War Veterans, Maria Assunta, American Legion, North American Hunting Club, a life member of the National Rifle Association, honorary life member of the Nescopeck Hunting & Rifle Club, and the Brick Layers Assn. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed the outdoors. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Red Rock in 1931 where he participated in local boxing tournaments. Mr. Bernocco served in the USMC during WWII. He worked on the construction of the nuclear power plant in Bell Bend, PA prior to retiring. Joseph was born April 10, 1915 in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Anthony James Bernocco whose family emigrated to America from Genoa Italy in the late 1800's and Helen Richardson Bernocco whose family originated in England. He was the oldest of 13 children. Joseph and Esther had 7 children. Their first daughter, Marie died at childbirth in 1939. Preceding him in death are his brothers, Bartholomew and James J. Bernocco, and sisters, Marion Martin, Elizabeth DeJesse, Helen Bernard, Dorothy Reiners, Margaret Palio, and Edith Vandever.
He is survived by his 3 sons, twins-Joseph Henry Bernocco, Jr. of Berwick, and Anthony James husband of Deborah Bernocco of Williamsport, Patrick G. and his wife Debbie Bernocco of Williamsport; 3 daughters, Barbara Ann wife of Dave Keller of Berwick, Celia Ann wife of William Strouse Jr. of Hummelstown and Yvonne Marie wife of Joseph R. Girio, Berwick; grandsons, William J. Strouse, III, Joshua Joseph Bernocco, David Matthew Girio, Benjamin J. Bernocco; granddaughters, Lisa M. Keller Subramanya, Andrea J. Bernocco, Suzanne Girio Colosimo; great grandchildren, Monica Christine Strouse, Jennifer Ann Strouse, Carley Shockey, Catrina Shockey; brother, Richard J. Bernocco of Philadelphia; 3 sisters, Mae Dougall of Williamstown NJ, Jean Kane of Drexel Hill PA, Antoinette Fusco of Schwenksville PA. He is also survived by family members Philip M. Colosimo, Leonilla Strouse, Michelle Bernocco, Nancy Shockey, and Arvind Subramanya. A Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 P.M. Thursday at the MAYO FUNERAL HOME, Inc., 110 Chestnut Street, Berwick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 A.M. Friday from St. Joseph Catholic Church, 721 Monroe Street, Berwick, PA with Rev. Dennis G. Dalessandro, his pastor officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cem., Berwick. A Memorial Luncheon will follow the Services at the Grave at the Maria Assunta on Monroe St., Berwick
