Joyce Moriarty Obituary

Moriarty Joyce Elizabeth Of Gladwyne, PA, 98, died on Dec. 6, 2024 at Waverly Heights in Gladwyne, PA. She is survived by two sons, Frank Cameron of New Castle, DE (Leigh Anne) and Gordon Ralph of Newton, MA (Stacey), and by two granddaughters, Lee of Park City, UT and Lauren of Brooklyn, NY. She was the widow of Ralph Floranz Moriarty to whom she was married for 62 years. She was the daughter of Cameron George and Hazel Elizabeth Spalding. Born in Memphis, TN, her roots as a Southerner never left her. She was educated in Memphis at Southwestern at Memphis, now Rhodes College. She and Mr. Moriarty met in Memphis where she was receptionist for the Vice-Presidents of Union Planters National Bank. He was struck by her vivacious personality and beauty and the romance that followed soon led to marriage. During her husband's career, they moved to several cities – the New York City area, Connecticut, Chicago, back to Memphis, and the Philadelphia Main Line. She did volunteer work in several areas, from Emergency Aide, Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church teaching Sunday School, Penn Valley Women's Club, and at the Lankenau Hospital. Mr. Moriarty later became President of Lankenau after serving on the hospital's Board, then went on to envision and found Main Line Health. She loved to entertain friends at dinner parties and was an excellent cook. She was an accomplished seamstress and loved to create beautiful clothes; her fashion sense was impeccable. For fourteen years, she and her husband lived on Skidaway Island outside of Savannah, GA and enjoyed lots of golf and the camaraderie of many close friends. In 2000, they returned to Gladwyne to take up residence at the Waverly Heights retirement community where she served on the Decorating Committee and he served on the Board. She was not new to Gladwyne as she and her husband previously owned a home on Merion Square Road for over twenty years. Her clubs included the Philadelphia Country Club, Sedgeley Club, The Union League, and Merion Cricket Club. Traveling was a way of life for the Moriarty's and they were cruisers with over 600 days at sea with one cruise line alone. They had twice circled the world. She will be remembered mostly for the warmth of her personality and her caring nature. She was always sure to greet fellow residents and staff of Waverly Heights with a warm smile and cheerful wave. Her family wishes to express gratitude for the care afforded to her by the Waverly Heights staff, including the Wellness Center, Dining Services, Building Maintenance, and Administration. She regarded you all as friends. In addition, the family is very grateful for the love and dedication provided by the caregivers from Waverly Care who kept her happy and safe - you became part of her family. I remember going to the Philly area to pick up Gordon to go to go back Northwestern before my senior year. The tail end of of a hurricane came through there and forced rain up under my wind shield and soaked all the cash I was taking with me (about $1000, a lot of money in those days).
I laid it out on my bed to dry. I came back in after seeing some of the sites in town and the door was open, bed completely remade and there little dog sleeping on my the bed. I freaked! I actually thought about killing the dog.
I asked Gordon what I should do when his mom came in and heard me.
She reassured me that she had hung the cash in the laundry room to dry.

She was one of the sweetest women I have ever had the privilege to meet.
I know that if you ever met her you will miss her.

I had the privilege and honor of meeting and getting to know Joyce when my parents lived at Waverly! Joyce was without a doubt my favorite! She was so lovely to my dad! Pure class ! So nice loving and welcoming to all ! Making cakes jams and whatnot for my dad ! We shared our love for sewing ! What talents she had and was so humble with them . A pure a real gem in life ! I send my sincerest condolences to Joyce `s family ! She is at peace I know . I think of her often but especially when I am at Lankenau. Imo Joyce´s defined the word LOVE ! With a heavy heart !
