I worked for Phil in the late 1970s as a piano teacher, though I knew him at first by the name Phil Carter. I happened to stumble upon this online while looking up something else.

Mr Zager taught me piano when I was 9 years old. Now, at 27, I still love to sit down at the piano, take out all of my old sheet music with the emphatic blue and green highlighter streaks, and play the music he taught me. He was a brilliant talent and a patient teacher... even when I didn't practice as much as I should have. Thank you for introducing me to the piano, Mr. Zager.

I just found out about Mr. Zager's passing and was very saddened by it. He taught my daughter Aubrey for a few years and even when she gave up piano lessons to follow other interests, Phil still found time to keep in touch and would show sincere interest in her new endeaver. I believe that Mr. Zager was one of those special people who are put on Earth to make things better as he touched all that he met in such a loving and positive way. We miss you Phil. My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Phil Zager. I am a friend of his from way back when. I used to go to dinner with him and Paul Leasoff often, when I was living in Philly. We knew each other from West Philly. He was a true friend and very talented person. He will be sorely missed by many. Shalom, Shalom! (Martin Moskow - 440-429-0508)

We are so sad to hear about the passing of Mr. Zager. My daughter and I have been taking lessons from him for 3 years, and we always looked forward to visiting with him. He loved to talk about movies, his children, bragging about all of his students (who he loved) and we shared a great love and respect of animals. What a sweet, sweet man and I'm so glad that we were able to know him. He will be missed terribly. Our very sincere condolences go out to his family and friends. We were very sad to hear of Mr. Zager's passing. Our daughter was taking piano lessons for over 2 years and has made such tremendous progress with Mr. Zager. He was such a caring, patient person and really understood how to keep our daughter challenged and interested in music. In Mr. Zager's honor, she has taken it upon herself to finish learning the Turkish March, the piece they were last working on together. We will miss Mr. Zager's visits every Wednesday evening. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I met Mr. Zager almost four years ago as an adult seeking piano lessons. I have never met such a gentle and patient person. It was obvious he loved to teach, he loved the music, and he loved his family. He set a fine example for all of us, and he will be terribly missed.

I have known Phil for about 30 years. His sister Toby is one of my best friends. At all their Family affairs, I would seek him out and have such wonderful conversations. When Mrs. Zager was alive ( his mother), the three of us would sit and chat for hours. He was truly a gentle man and came from a very loving family, and he carried that legacy through-out his life. No matter where I saw him, his face had a wonderful smile, and as his sister Toby always said, "He was the happiest man she knew". A humble, kind soul. I will miss him and never forget his kindness to all.

We are saddened by the early passing of the man we first knew as "Pauline's dad". We know he was a great music teacher, kind and gentle and always happy to help any way he could. He will be missed.

We were so sad to hear of Phils's passing.
My 10-year old daughter has been taking lessons every Friday for the last year and a half and we could not have had a better person for her first experience in playing the panio and love for music.
Even though I would sit in his home and listen to them he would always get me invloved and incorporate different music into the lesson quizing me on if I knew the song or not.
He had a great sense of humor and a tremendous amount of passion for teaching and mentoring, as well as just caring. He will be missed but I know that my daughter will continue on with her piano not just becuase he would want her to, but becuase of the love for it that he instilled in her which is the guarantee that he will alway be alive in our hearts and our music.
Our thoughts go out to the entire Zager Family - he will be missed!

I've been studying the piano with Mr. Zager since 1995. He was passionate about his family, his career, and life in general. I've enjoyed his silly jokes during the lessons and hearing his knowledge on the musicians I've studied. The world mourns the loss of a wonderful man. My deepest condolences go out to his family.

We are all saddened to hear about Phil. We share in your loss....He touched our family and especially our two young daughters whom he taught. They will be very upset when they hear. Their passion for playing the piano was a direct result of Phil's instruction.

I'm so sorry to hear of Mr. Zager's passing.. He was a great teacher, more than I could ever ask for. He was understanding when I didn't always keep up with practicing and never wanted me to miss a lesson. I appreciate the patience he had with me. I learned so much from him. Mr. Zager had such an inspiring talent. He was one of kindest people I know. I'll miss having lessons with him and will never forget him.. Our condolences, Melanie, Brian, and Cathy Murphy.

Our sincere sympathy to Mr. Zager's family. We thought a lot of your dad. Emily and Jeffrey made great progress on the piano under his teaching. He had an encouraging and kind way about him. We will certainly miss him. May God be with you in the coming days.

So very sorry to read of Phil's passing.
My husband Stan was in his class at W. Philadelphia H.S., and I knew him from the YMHA many years ago.
His was a great talent. I'm a pianist myself, but couldn't hold a candle to Phil.
Phil played at a party we had for our 25th wedding anniversary at our home, and he was wonderful.
He will be terribly missed. Our sincere condolences to the family.

Phil was a fun person to be with. At weddings and Bar Mitzvahs, he was always the one I would seek out. He will truly be missed by all who knew him. Heaven has gained a great pianist to keep them entertained. Sincerely, Pat Fromm

I was shocked to find out today that Mr. Zager had passed away. I had just started taking piano lessons from him about a month and a half ago. He was a very good teacher. I had trouble in the past finding a teacher that I liked. But Mr. Zager was very patient and encouraging. He had a great style of teaching and I was very much enjoying my lessons with him. I wish I would have met him sooner and had more time to know him. He was a wonderful teacher and person. I'm glad that I had the chance to meet him, even if it was only for a short amount of time. My condolences to the family.
