I will miss my sweet grandmom, Rose Bloomfield, very much. She and my grandpop would fly together from Philadelphia to California to visit my family almost every year. I remember picking them up at the airport. As soon as smy grandmom caught a glimpse of my brother Joshua and me, she would drop her bags and hold out her arms to us to give us big hugs. We went on wonderful trips with my grandparents when they visited us in California - Big Bear, Lake Tahoe, Palm Springs. But my grandmom and I especially liked to looky-loo.
My grandmom also instilled in my brother and me a love for the game of Scrabble. When we were little, all we had to do was say, "I could sure usa an 'S'", and the next thing you knew, a soft hand was patting yours under the table and in it, the letter "S"! Josh and I play Scrabble a little more professionally these days. And speaking of hands, she loved holding hands. She always held on tight, too. I will miss holding her hand.
I also loved visiting my grandmom in Philadelphia. We would go to art museums, theatrical productions, and a special ice cream parlor in Germantown. But my favorite times with her in Philly were sharing quiet mornings in her apartment at Pelham Park. I always knew I had slept in a little too late when I saw her crack open my door and peek in to check if I was awake yet. By the time I had finished getting ready, grandmom would have prepared a delicious spread of bagels and lox with all of the fixings.
I have millions more memories of my funny, loving, original, darling grandmom. I will share them with my relatives at her memorial in Philly. Grandmom, the first chance I get, I will plant an avocado pit in your honor. I love you.
