Steve was one of the finest men I ever met. I met him while he worked at Cids when we were in our 20s during one of several of my summers in Cape May. He was a kind and gentle man who always treated me with respect. I was so shy but Steve put me at ease. I have never forgotten him and began to search for him on the web in the past year. Im sorry he passed away so early. Im sure it was a devastating loss for family, friends and colleagues. It was an honor for me to have known him as I did.

Dear Karen & sons,
We extend our heartfelt sympathy to you. My family first met the Berks in 1958, when Steve's father and Board of Education member, Bernie, interviewed my father, Paul W. Schmidtchen, for the position of Superintendent of the soon-to-be-built Lower Cape May Regional School District. Although Steve and his buddy, Steve Teitelman, were a year ahead of me in school, we became good friends. Some of my best memories of "Berk" (the name his father affectionately called him) revolved around playing high school sports with him. Steve also introduced me to the music of Simon & Garfunkel. In 1976, Mayor Bernie Berk married my wife and me in one of the first Cape May Rotary Bandstand weddings. Steve and his family always will bring back fond memories of my youth.
Warmest regards,
Peer & Gail Schmidtchen

Steve was my best friend in high school . He was always kind and always made me laugh. Even in high school, he had a great insight into people. I had great respect for Steve and his family.
He never lost track of his goals in life and was very focused on reaching them.
My heart goes out to his wife and boys. I am sure he will be sorley missed. My deepest sympathies for Jeannie and her family.
