Bruce Tofte Obituary

Bruce Eric Tofte, 69, of Bluffton passed away at Memorial Hospital on Saturday, December 1, 2012 after a long and courageous battle with leukemia. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Alice; devoted children Dena (Nick) Amodio and Eric Tofte (Linda); treasured grandsons Matthew and Michael Tofte and Nicholas and Christopher Amodio; brother George Tofte (Peg); sister Joyce (Larry) Caisse; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Bruce was born on August 9, 1943 in Cohoes, New York, to Rose M. Corona and Eric P. Tofte. He was a graduate of Cohoes High School and Siena College in Loudonville, New York. Bruce began his career as a CPA with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell in Albany, New York and spent the last 22 years of his career with KeyCorp, retiring in 1997 as an Executive Vice President. Bruce and Alice raised their family in Clifton Park, New York, where one of his favorite pastimes was coaching his children's baseball and softball teams. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his kindness and sportsmanship, both on and off the field. In his earlier years he was an avid do-it-yourselfer who never met a project he wouldn't tackle, often to the chagrin of his wife. Bruce cheerfully volunteered his time for his church and community wherever and whenever he was needed. In 1999, Bruce retired to Bluffton where he enjoyed golfing with family and friends, visits from his children and grandchildren, and a glass or two of fine red wine. He will miss the Carolina blue skies, lowcountry sunsets and all of the dear friends who made his retirement in Colleton River Plantation so special. The Tofte family will never forget the wonderful care that Bruce received from Dr. Bud Robertson and the medical team at Summit Cancer Care in Savannah, whose compassion and concern helped to make an exceedingly difficult journey a bit less trying. Funeral services will be Thursday, December 6 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church, 45 Beach City Road, Hilton Head. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Bruce's memory to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202 or www.lls.org. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements. www.theislandfuneralhome.com

Alice and family, my deepest sympathies on your loss. Bruce was a wonderful boss, motivator and leader. I came to know him when Key bought my bank in Maine back in the early 80's. I remember him often, as I use the phrase he would frequently say, "Never count a day lost if you learn something new." I didn't know he had been ill. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I heard this sad news through mutual "Key" friends who have kept in touch all these years. I remember our dinner in Charleston a few years back when we visited the area. To Alice and the family and friends of Bruce Tofte,

I first met Bruce when we were members of the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Area Chapter of the Jaycees in the mid-70's. Through Bruce I also met his effervescent wife, Alice, the ideal complement to her husband's laid back personality. What a perfect pairing!

Blessed with an affable nature and an enthusiastic embrace of all that life has to offer, Bruce was a pleasure to be around. Although now gone from our midst, he will remain an inspiration for all of us privileged to have known him. Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of a good man.
