Jere Adams Ayers

Spring Island, South Carolina - Jere A. Ayers, 82, of Spring Island, SC passed away peacefully at his home in Sedgefield, NC on February 17, 2025. Born in Greensboro, NC, on May 8, 1942, he was the son of Nathan and Nell Ayers, who predeceased him.
Jere was a distinguished businessman, holding several leadership roles throughout his career. He served as Executive Vice President and Treasurer of Highland Yarn Mills, Vice President and Treasurer of Hatteras Realty and Supply, Owner of Cari Fabrics, Founder of ACW Dry Cleaners, President of Higgins Slacks, Board of Directors Wachovia Bank of High Point, and Partner at My Garb. His professional legacy also includes being President of the Children's Home Society of Greensboro, an active member and officer of the Sedgefield Country Club, the Spring Island Club, the Chechessee Creek Club, and the Rolling Rock Club.
A passionate outdoorsman and avid traveler, Jere found joy in entertaining and cherishing time with his family. A graduate of Woodberry Forest School in 1960 and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1964. He proudly played on the varsity golf team while at Chapel Hill and was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He remained an accomplished amateur golfer thereafter.
Jere's enduring legacy will live on through his beloved wife of 59 years, Elsa; his younger sister, Betty Hicks (Bill); daughters Smedes Ayers Lindner (Doug) and Elizabeth Ayers Maybank (Thomas); and his treasured grandchildren, John Drake Karcher, Elsa Rose Karcher, Tad Maybank, Margaret Maybank, and Joseph Maybank, and step grandchildren, Sarah Lindner, George Lindner and Edward Lindner.
With a gift of humor and optimism, he never met a stranger and always had a great story to tell. A man of integrity, kindness, and warmth, Jere will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The family will receive friends and loved ones at their home in Sedgefield, Friday, February 28, 2025, from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. A memorial service to celebrate Jere's life, will be held Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., at St Mary's Episcopal Church, 108 W. Farriss Ave., High Point, NC 27262. Another memorial service will be held at St. Helena Parrish in Beaufort, SC at a later date.
