John Carter Obituary

John F Carter, Jr. John F. Carter Jr., age 66, passed away on February 14, 2015, at the E.T. York Hospice Care Center in Gainesville, FL, after a hard-fought battle against cancer.Born in Charleston, SC, but raised in Beaufort, SC, he was the son of John Fain Carter Sr. and Muriel All Carter. He graduated from Beaufort High School in 1967 and attended USCB and USC. He is survived by his daughters and grandchildren: Heather Upton (husband Bob, children Robert, J.C., Hannah, and Josephine) of Savannah, GA, and Allison Privette (husband Robert, children Coley, Kate, Elizabeth, and Charlotte) of Gainesville, FL, as well as his former wife Rebecca Lee Ballard. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Dorothy Carter, and his brother Paul Carter.John was a master woodworker and mechanic. From beautiful cabinetry to heirloom rocking horses, his craftsmanship will be cherished by many generations to come. He was able to restore anything with an engine and could been seen throughout the years in a vintage electric blue Corvette or on a brilliantly restored 1951 John Deere tractor. After many years in management at various furniture stores, John became a longtime businessman in Hilton Head Island, SC. First, he was owner of Atlantic Furniture and All About Linens. Then, he decided to go fishing and became the owner/captain of Tammy Jane Charters. Captain John truly loved the ocean and particularly Port Royal Sound. It thrilled him to share his knowledge and promote estuary conservation through his fishing and shrimping charters. Most special were the times he was able to partner with organizations such as Fish with Friends and Camp Leo to take children out on the water.A memorial gathering will be held at 2:30pm on March 14th at Hudson's Seafood House on the Docks, 1 Hudson Road, Hilton Head Island. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Fish with Friends, 70 N Calibogue Cay Rd, Hilton Head Is, SC 29928 or Haven Hospice of North Central Florida.

John was a fine friend and brother-in-law. He always had a smile and a laugh and was always doing something thoughtful for others. He is missed! Fair winds and following seas!

I have many very fond memories of John. We had some great times in Beaufort growing up and attending Youth Group and Choir at Baptist Church of BeUfort. It was great to see him on Hilton Head and share a meal and visit. I enjoyed a private fishing charter with my sister Ann and one of her friends. We caught a HUGE shark! I will never forget the Pilot trip to bring a ship into Port Royal Sound. Thank you John for the many memories we shared.

I worked with John Carter on hilton Head island for the Melrose Corporation in the early 90s . John and i were life long friends in my book as we both shared the same love of the lowcountry. he taught me alot about boats as we worked on the William Hilton a charter boat that ran a ferry system to and from Daufuskie island. we spent alot of hours on the water together i will always hold Captain John Carter in my heart ,he was indeed a great person that i was lucky enough to have known . thanks for the memories John. jeff Duncan 1st mate William Hilton
