Joseph Harter Obituary

Joseph Harter

June 11, 2025

Jacksonville, Florida - Joseph "Joe" Harter, 77, of Jacksonville, Florida, formerly of Port Royal, passed away on June 11, 2025.

Born and raised in Port Royal, Joe proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Security Agency, where he was part of a highly classified Signals Intelligence unit during the Vietnam War.

Following his military service, Joe returned to his Lowcountry roots and worked as both a shrimper and a skilled boat builder, trades that reflected his lifelong connection to the water and the coast he loved.

Joe is survived by his son, Taylor Harter (Arden), and his three beloved grandchildren: John "JJ," Hattie, and Peter. He was preceded in death by his parents, John "Pie" and Nell Harter; and his siblings, Johnnie Lenahan and John "Jay" Harter. He is also survived by his brother, Lloyd "Wesley" Harter, and his sister, Mary Taylor.

A committal service with military honors will be held on Monday, August 4, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Beaufort National Cemetery. The service is open to the public for all who wish to attend and honor Joe's life and service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Joe's name to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.
