Robert G. Bartlett

Robert G. Bartlett (Bob) Hilton Head Island, SC Passed away recently from a sudden stroke at home in Hilton Head Island, SC. He was at peace, passed with dignity and his loving family at his side. Born November 12, 1931 to Theodore and Marjorie Bartlett of Oceanside, New York Attended and graduated in 1953 from the United States Military Academy (USMA, West Point) with a BS in Engineering and commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army. Served as an officer in the US Army Corps of Engineers in Korea and various postings in the US until retiring from active duty as a Captain in 1957. Worked as an Engineer and Labor Relations Specialist with Bethlehem Steel Company, was the Pennsylvania Secretary of Highways and member of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and was Executive Vice President of L. B. Smith, Inc. in Camp Hill, PA. His last management role before retirement was as President and CEO of the National Stone Association in Washington, D. C. Always active in civic affairs, Bob led the PTA, founded City Line Little League and was active in the Jaycees in Bethlehem, PA. He was the campaign manager for the winning candidate in a mayoral election in Bethlehem and was the 1963 Republican nominee for the U.S. Congress in his home district in PA. After moving to Harrisburg in 1965, Bob continued his public service as a volunteer leader in the United Way, Crusade Chairman in the American Cancer Society and was President of the Harrisburg, PA Area YMCA. He remained active in retirement in Hilton Head Island working on many neighborhood associations and committees. He married his high school sweetheart upon graduation in June of 1953, the former Carol Ann Sturr of Brooklyn, NY and enjoyed over 62 years of marriage before his passing. He is survived by Carol, their 5 children, 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Children: Jeff Bartlett (wife Marianne) of Singapore, Lynne Bartlett of Maumee, OH, Susan Dunbar (husband Douglas) of Carlisle, PA, Craig Bartlett of Harrisburg, PA and Wes Bartlett (wife Patricia) of Brentwood, TN Grandchildren: Timothy Bartlett (wife Svea Eppler-Bartlett ) of Carnation, WA, Kristen Suehrstedt of Cleveland, OH, Sarabeth Krulock (husband John) of Devon, PA, Jonathan Bartlett of Brooklyn, NY, Lauren VanTress (husband Jeremy) of Perrysburg, OH and Megan Suehrstedt of Maumee, OH Great Grandchildren: Reid Krulock of Devon, PA, Nora VanTress of Perrysburg, OH and Wilson Krulock of Devon, PA The family held a private funeral service and thoughtfully asks, that in lieu of flowers, to please consider a donation in Bob's honor to the USMA Class of 1953 Superintendent's Endowment, and mailed to the Office of Class Giving, 698 Mills Road, West Point, NY 10996-1607.
