Active in Swampscott town governmentSWAMPSCOTT - David Patrick Whelan Jr., age 54, of Swampscott, died September 1, 2012, after a brief battle with cancer. Born January 23, 1958, in Malden, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late David Patrick and Mary (Dunn) Whelan.Besides his wife Jean, he is survived by his two children, Hilary and Trevor, both of Swampscott, and his siblings, Robert M. Whelan of Salem, Barbara McDonough of Billerica and John Lingaitis of Beverly. He also leaves several nieces and nephews, and many close friends.He was raised in Swampscott, graduating from Swampscott High School in 1975 and from Merrimack College in 1980.Throughout his life, Dave had a love for the Town of Swampscott, serving as Town Treasurer, Town Meeting Member and Chairman of the School Committee. He also served on the Republican Town Committee, Recreation Commission, SUCCESS, Youth Soccer Board, Phillips Park Committee, Abbott Park Playground Committee, and the Board of Trustees of Marian Court College. He was the recipient of the 2012 Swampscott Distinguished Citizen Award. Dave was known for his commitment to bettering education, his involvement in the town, and his integrity, and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the town he served in so many capacities.Dave loved sports, particularly the New England Patriots. He was an avid reader of history, politics and biographies. He also loved to run and keep fit. But most of all, Dave loved tropical vacations with his family.Dave was a self-employed CPA and financial planner for most of his professional career and the founder of Eaglerock Advisory Group in Swampscott. In January 2011 Dave became Vice President- Business Development for The Professional Alliance in Milford, MA.Service Information: His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the SOLIMINE, LANDERGAN AND RICHARDSON FUNERAL HOME, 67 Ocean St. (Route 1A), Lynn, followed by a funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, Swampscott at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Swampscott Cemetery.
