ANN MITCHELL HORNE obituary, 1927-2021, El Centro, CA

ANN HORNE Obituary

Ann Horne, 93, and her strong soprano voice went to join the heavenly choir of angels on January 8, 2021. Of course, the family consensus is that soon after arriving, she would have taken over as Head Choral Director, since whoever was in charge up there would not have been running things in accordance with her exacting standards. Dorothy Ann Mitchell was born on October 24, 1927 in El Centro, the first child of Frank H. Red and Bess Mitchell. Ann attended local schools and graduated from Central High in 1943. She received a degree in music from Occidental College in Los Angeles, and, after briefly attending Stanford University, returned to El Centro where she met and married Othniel Horne on November 12, 1949. While Niel was building his real estate business, Ann was busy raising their 5 children and active at the First Presbyterian church, where she served as Music Director. Many knew Ann as the founder and director of the youth singing group known as Creation Unlimited, which performed throughout the United States and Europe for many years. After her kids were all in school, Ann began a notable career as the choral music teacher at Calexico High School. There, she was instrumental in the formation of La Estudiantina El Cid, a musical group that brought authentic Mexican folk performances to many parts of the country, including to Washington D.C. and New York City. After retirement from teaching, Ann continued her work with Creation Unlimited, then based at the First Christian Church, and was active in a number of community efforts. She served on a committee looking to acquire a civic auditorium for El Centro which culminated with the owner of the downtown Fox Theater building agreeing to donate the property to the City for that purpose. Unfortunately, before the deal could be completed, the darn thing burned to the ground. These efforts, however, were not in vain, as they eventually led to the construction of the Jimmie Cannon Theater at Southwest High School. Ann loved music- she taught singing lessons privately throughout her life and sang for many years in the Imperial Valley Master Chorale. In her spare time, Ann devoted countless hours to her passionate pursuit of genealogy, unearthing every possible fact about every living or deceased relative of hers that had ever walked the face of the earth. She researched, wrote and published several books on the subject, traveling extensively to Texas, North Carolina, New York, Salt Lake City and elsewhere in the process. So, if there is anyone out there who has the slightest interest in knowing everything there is to know about the Descendants of Jeremiah Mitchell or Thomas Wilson, there may be a few extra copies of her books lying around here somewhere. Ann proudly established her credentials to join the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), whereby one must prove that they are directly descended from an American veteran of the Revolutionary War. Ann was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Niel; her brother Frank H. Hud Mitchell Jr. and sister Mary Ann Mitchell. She is survived by her brother, Steve Mitchell; cousin Mary Ann Kline; children Bob (Karla), Andy (Alexa), Tom (Melody), Larry (fiance Leah), Betsy (John Lane); eleven grandchildren, five and one-half great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a virtual ZOOM memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 1 p.m. Those wishing to participate should send an email to AnnHorneMemorial @gmail.com. A reply email will then be sent with the login information.. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Anns name to the Imperial Valley Choral Society, P.O. Box 3531, El Centro, CA, 92244-3531.

Ann and I shared an interest in genealogy and we exchanged volumes of information years ago. We even traveled from Brooklyn, NY and stayed with her in El Centro around 2002. I recently found some information that I wanted to share with her, and then I discovered that she had passed. She was a wonderful person and a talented genealogical researcher. I'm saddened to learn of her passing and send my sincere condolences to her survivors. RIP Ann Horne. You were a wonderful acquaintance.

I was lucky the day someone gave me Ann's name to help with my genealogy. She corresponded with me on and off over 25 years. We shared New York family lines....she was always willing to help and share.
I'll bet she is meeting all the ancestors up there right now!

If there was one adult I can look back at in my life outside of my family who made me believe in myself and always told me, "You can do it!," it was Mrs. Horne.
My coach, my director, my spiritual advisor, my voice teacher and all around loving person who took so many under her wings, has gone to heaven. I'm so sad to learn of her passing but joyous knowing that she has reached that higher level she always shared with me and others. Peace, love and prayers to the Horne and Mitchell families.

Ann was my Mom's best friend after Mom (Margaret Carroll) moved back to El Centro. Ann was the best thing that could have happened to my Mom. I was blessed to have been involved w/Ann in the Creation Unlimited Album and my Son (Robert) sang one tour w/ Creation Unlimited. The picture was taken in NYC.

I knew Ann as I was fortunate enough to have her as a director for the Christian singing group “Creation Unlimited” when I was in high school. Ann had the vision, sacrifice of thousands of hours, and patience of Job to lead literally hundreds of teens over the years in singing, friendship, and love, and became a second mom to many. Ann was also a great friend to my mother, Hilda Gresham. Together, along with Cynthia Brown, Viola Adams, and Lera Poole were lovingly called “The Big Five” by the Lehr and Brown girls for their tenacity in praying and getting things done. Ann will be missed by the thousands of people whose lives that she influenced and welcomed into heaven by God, the Angels, and her other four besties that are jumping up and down to be together again.

Horne family...we love you❤

Ann Horne was a strong and confident woman. I've known the Horne family since Bob and I were both in 2nd grade at McCabe. Even now Bob and I still play music together. Undoubtedly that's because of Ann being so musical. My condolences to the Horne family.

Ann was a great influence on many students at Calexico High School. I remember her warmth, humor, and great direction of the choir of which I was a member. She was one reason I still sing in choir nearly 50 years later.

Ann was one of my dearest friends all my life. I studied voice with her while in high school. She and her family lived across the street from my family. My kid brothers grew up with the Horne boys, and I think a couple of them are still in touch. Ann always said they reversed the Frauenthals. They had 4 boys and then a girl instead of a girl and then 4 boys. When my father was killed in an airplane crash, Ann continued my voice lessons free. I loved her dearly, and my condolences go out to Bob, Andy, Tom, Larry and Betsy. You were blessed to have her for your mother.

So many friends and fond memories were made. So many testimonies were gained and grew. So many loves were touched. All because of a dream of Mrs. Horne. She was my mentor in life during the most difficult times. She will be greatly missed in this mortal life, but has earned her place with our Heavenly Father.
My thoughts and prayers are with Bob, Andy, Tom, Larry and Betsy and their families. ❤
Love,
Sandi (CU 1973-1980)
