James Summers Obituary
James V. "Jim" Summers, 70, of Lafayette, passed away at 4:10 a.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at IU Heath Arnett in Lafayette. He was born on November 26, 1943 the son of the late Gale and Florence (Richard) Summers in Lafayette. Jim married Betty (Sutton) Miller on Febuary 9, 1974 in Lafayette and she survives. He was a graduate of Dayton High School and a member of the Dayton United Methodist Church. He worked as a plumber for Stans Professional Plumbing Service for 12 years and at Eli Lily for 31 years. Jim was an avid bowler with a 299 high game, was named Lafayette Mr. Bowler and was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed softball, playing cards and gambling at casinos.
He is survived by his four children, Allison Drader (husband Jim) of Valparaiso, IN, Jeff Summers (Kristi) of Lafayette, Ted Summers (wife Mary) of Bedford, and Karl Miller of Lafayette; three siblings, Jackie Herlin (husband Russ) of Monee, IL, Mike Summers (wife Sharon) of Lafayette, and Denny Summers of Lafayette; eleven grandchildren, Abby, Allie and Jessie Drader, Tyler, Paige, Chase, Tony, Shianne and Shay-Lee Summers, and Bailey and Alex Miller.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Bill Summers.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hippensteel Funeral Home with the Celebration of Life service on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with Life Celebrant Cyndy Shafer officiating. Thinking of you in this time of great loss to you. I met Jim in the mid 70s. A very hard working man holding down two jobs. Plumbing when he could and at Lilly. Fun guy to work with.

Betty,
I just want to express our sorrows at the passing of Jim. I have known Jim for a lifetime and the things I remember are the long evening we both spent working after hours as he would be installing the plumbing and I the electrical on apartment projects. His work was always top notch. But thing I like to remember the most are the many times we played softball against each other. He was a good player who was both a gracious loser and humble winner. May God give you strength in this time of grieving. Keep his memories alive as you continue on.

Jim was a great and extremely polite person in any circumstance one would interact with him. Knew him as a peer at Lilly and later he did the plumbing in our home, to say it was anything less than stellar was an understatement, he prided himself on his work and I have never seen anyone better, a true professional. My sympathies to his family in this very tough time.

Another angel received his wings. He was the best uncle anyone could have. My dad has welcomed him home and they are busy together now in Heavens Casinos.
