Leonard Lewis Obituary

Leonard Eugene "Lug" Lewis

Leonard Eugene "Lug" Lewis died peacefully at age 88, with his wife Ernestine by his side, on May 14, 2016. He was born in Lafayette, Indiana to Alfred and Vera Lewis and continued to live in Lafayette until he retired and moved to Logansport, Indiana in 1988. Leonard attended Canterbury College, Danville, IN; Purdue University, Indiana State University and Indiana University, receiving his Master's Degree in Education. He married Ernestine (Dietel) of Fort Wayne, Indiana on August 20, 1949 and they enjoyed 66 wonderful years together as best friends and constant companions, sharing, celebrating and supporting each other through life's many journeys. Leonard was active in leadership roles in the communities of Lafayette where he was elected as a City Councilman for the first District, November 6, 1973; and in Logansport where he resided for a number of years. He served as a science/civics/guidance teacher for the Lafayette School Corporation at Sunnyside Jr. High School, but his role as husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather was his most cherished. Lug knew no strangers and was known to sit down and talk whenever needed by friends, family, and people he had just met. He was a community servant with the Lafayette Lions Club for many years, New Hope Lutheran Church in Monticello, Indiana and he will be deeply missed by all those he touched. In addition to his wife, he is survived by Mark Lewis (Kathy)Windsor, Colorado, Linda Marsh (Steve) Portland, Indiana, Laura Pottinger (John) North Aurora, Illinois, grandchildren, great-grand-children, nieces, and nephews. Friends may call at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette one hour prior to the memorial service at 11:00 AM Wednesday May 25, Pastor Doug Givan officiating. Donations in celebration of Leonard's life may be made to: Indiana Lions Foundation, 8780 Purdue Road, Indianapolis, IN 46268. Memories and condolences may be left at www.hahngroeberfuneralhome.com

I regret that I never had a chance to tell Mr. Lewis the positive impact he made on my life. He was a champion of kids when everyone else was hyper critical. I adored him and his guidance has made me a better person, today. I am deeply sad that the world has lost such a lovely soul.

I never got to tell Mr. Lewis what a profound impact he made on my life. He was a believer and a champion of kids when so many other teacher weren't. I am so grateful for all of his teachings and for telling me that I could do and accomplish anything. Such a gift. I owe a great deal to this man - such a wonderful human being.

One of the most popular teachers at Sunnyside, students really enjoyed Mr Lewis for his great personality and teaching ability without having to suffer utter boredom! My science education and interest came in real handy for earning my BS at PU years later. Vickie Orr Louderback JHS '71

My deepest sympathy for Ernie and her family. I have many wonderful memories working with Ernie and eating out with her and Lug. He was one big lovable "teddy bear" and I'll remember him always.

My deepest sympathies to the Family. Lug and I and others played football at Jeff. It has been many years since I saw him, but will always remember his hearty laugh and humor. Odly enough, I saw it in his face in the picture. I am sure he was a great counselor and teacher and model for the youth he must have guided. We had such great times with Lug and Erne going out to eat and visiting them in their home. They were faithful members of New Hope Lutheran. Lug would often set in his car in front of church waiting for Erne to come out from quilting; that was when Lug and I had many talks. We had a lot in common as fellow teachers. When they entered Rose Walk and Westminster Nadine and I visited them often and kept up our friendship

I first met Lug and his family when I was twelve and delivered newspapers. I looked forward to talking with them when I collected. I later taught with him at Sunnyside and gained deep respect for him -- his calm, humorous outlook and his commitment to his students and to making the world a better place set an example that will live beyond him. He will be missed.

Our deepest sympathy to Ernie and the family.
