John McHugh Obituary

John H. McHugh, 81, of Manchester, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022, with his family by his side.

John was born on Nov. 10, 1941, in Manchester, one of four children of the late John H. Sr. and Helen (Adamson) McHugh. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, proudly serving his country from 1959-1962. Prior to his retirement, John was a long-haul truck driver for over 20 years. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 102 and a former, longtime member of the Army & Navy Club in Manchester. John was a man of few words. He was an avid reader and enjoyed saltwater and fly-fishing. He took many long drives to the shore with his lawn chair and fishing rod. While enjoying the view he was sure to sneak in a nap or two. In his retirement his compassion for stray cats grew. He was such an old softy for feeding many, providing temporary shelter, trips to the vet, and working with local rescues to find forever homes. A few even found their home with him.

He leaves his two cherished daughters, Conni Yett and her husband, Michael of Texas, and Heidi Morse and her husband, James of Vernon; eight grandchildren, Beckett Morse, Lillian Morse John McHugh and his wife, Crystal, Laura Kloter and her husband, Scott, Ashley King, Scott McHugh, Jessica Yett, Michelle Stone and her husband, Christopher; his ten great-grandchildren; his three siblings, Carol Dupont and her husband, Rudolph, Joanne Walker, Gary McHugh and his wife, Sharon; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families; as well as his beloved feline companion, Maggie. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his best friend and longtime companion, Gay Dudzic; his son John D. McHugh; and two feline companions, Sammie and Toby.

Private burial with Military Honors will be in the West Street Cemetery, Columbia. There are no calling hours.

Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home in Vernon, has care of the arrangements.

Big Red as Johnny was known to myself and a select few will be surely missed ! He was a man of great character and story telling capabilities. We shared many a laugh painting together and sharing some well deserved cold brews in the shade afterwards.
He could always brighten a room with his smile and distinct laughter!!
Until we meet again ....
Fly High & God Speed Big Red !!

I will miss John a lot. We had great small trips these last few years, usually stopping for hamburgers with John and Fred eating them and me wondering how I got stuck with two cousins liking the same thing! We shared our love for genealogy and going through pictures together. He loved halloween and one special Christmas
(2018) when all my girls and grandchildren were home.
He was there at times for Fred, and was a true and steadfast friend to me on his last day during Covid.
Memories, hold tight to them during this time and go on and make more with those left behind.
My love to all the family,
Linda
