Marshall Anderson Atwater

Marshall Anderson Atwater, of Tolland, passed away on Friday, April 8, 2022, after a brief illness.

He was born Feb. 14, 1940, in New Haven, to the late Charles and Alice (Anderson) Atwater. Marshall received his BS in Meteorology at Penn State and his Masters and PhD. at New York University. He had a long career in meteorological research, energy, information technology, as well as teaching at Eastern Connecticut State University, Central Connecticut University and Manchester Community College. After retirement he wrote several books on the local history of Vernon and Tolland as well as a definitive account of the United Congregational Church of Tolland origins. He and his wife Angela (Falcetta) Atwater spent many years in Tolland as well as Vernon after their marriage. Marshall was very active in the Congregational Church serving as a deacon and as a member of various church committees.

In addition to his wife Angela, he is survived by his brother Phillip of East Hampton; his children, Cynthia Atwater of Ellington, Matthew Atwater of Wethersfield with his partner, Maggie Downie; and grandson Joshua Atwater-Rec of Ellington. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Barbara Falcetta-Mills; his brother-in-law Vincenzo Falcetta; and nieces and nephews, Francesca Morrell and partner, Richard Cinque, Jason Falcetta and wife, Paula, Catherine Albert and husband, Ryan; as well as his grandnieces and grandnephew, Samantha Morrell, and Amelia and Reid Albert. He is also survived by close friends Heather (Whelton) Keaton of El Paso and Daniel Whelton of Manchester and their families. In addition to his parents Marshall was predeceased by his sister Frances Ruth Atwater.

Friends and family may pay their respects on Saturday, April 16, 2022, from 9 to 11 a.m., at the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Merrow Road (RT195) Tolland, with a Remembrance service at 11:30 a.m. at the United Congregational Church of Tolland at 45 Tolland Green. Marshall will be laid to rest in Rose Hill Memorial Park at a private service.
