Greg Scott Obituary

Greg Owen Scott

January 10, 2021

Greg Owen Scott died January 10th, 2021 after complications from a heart attack. Greg led a life of art and creation, representing the world around him through paint, illustration, and design. Art was easily his most fluent language and his talent was endless.

Raised in Nebraska, Greg started doing rock posters and music-related art from the time he was in high school. Right out of college Greg went west and was hired by Rolling Stone in 1974. He spent the next 6 years designing and illustrating for the magazine. This led to freelancing in NYC, and doing a series of album covers for Blue Oyster Cult at Columbia.

Greg has illustrated for Rolling Stone, The New York Times, New York Magazine, Esquire, Psychology Today, Games Magazine, Science Digest, Popular Mechanics, The Museum of Modern Art, and numerous other national publications and institutions.

Most recently Greg was using his time to teach art at Behavioral and Integrated Health Services in Lincoln, NE. Greg was a lover of chess, sports, movies, and music --at one point having over 2000 records lining the walls of his NM apt.

Along Greg's journey he struggled with his mental health, and his disease isolated and complicated his life. We as a family want to shed light on this problem that haunts so many but is often not spoken of. If you are experiencing hardship of any kind please reach out to the people around you, you are loved.

Preceded in death by his parents Bob and Millicent Scott. Survived by son Seth S. Scott and his partner Jessica Kostelnick, daughter Claire M. Scott, brothers Gary and Jon Scott, sister Julie and her husband George BuAbbud, Seth's mom Holly Sherwood, and many loving nieces and nephews.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Behavioral and Integrated Health Services in Lincoln, NE. For condolences please email: [email protected]

I met Greg in Albuquerque when we both lived in apartments near El Dorado High School. We talked and he told me his stories. He was so sincere and creative. His talent was evident in his artwork. I saw commissions for so many different things. I bought a couple things from him when he moved on, and we stayed acquaintances and talked on the phone. He was always willing to share ideas. Knowing Greg brought a deeper understanding of life to me. I can imagine his life like a Herman Hesse novel, it was so full. Dedication to ideals, a simple life lived with extreme complexity, and talent that leapt from his fingertips like summer butterflies.

It is your birthday today and I will always remember that Halloween is your day, but it is also the day I learned that you are no longer with us, my friend. The last time I visited you, you gave me some special gifts to treasure... your artwork. This is the bond we shared as artists. You will always live on in my heart, dear art brother.

The adventure that comes to mind is a sunny day on cross country skis in the Fraser experimental forest. He did find delight in the name.

Greg was a year older than I. We got as close as two kids in a high school art studio can get. He was smart, sensitive, and even then you could tell he was a genius at graphic art. He was kind to me and i'm sorry to hear this news; my condolences to his close and extended family. He will be missed.

Greg and I were close friends since 1971, meeting at the Univ. of Nebraska/Lincoln. We shared many interests and adventures over several decades, but I lost touch with him after 2007...Sorry to hear of his passing. He was a most talented artist, and we had many mutual friends over the years. While I lived in California, 1974-'86, I also represented artists as Freeman Zygote, and Greg and I had many opportunities during those years, with both visual and performing artists. I'm sad to learn that he is gone, as I had tried many times to locate him since 2007. I still have photos from time together, and have shared some of these with friends and family. Again, my condolences to his family members.
