Jim Gordon Obituary

Jim Gordon

September 5, 1946 - September 2, 2021

Jim Gordon - lover of life, colorful jokes, and well-cooked Nebraska steaks* - made his last, largely irreverent gesture on September 2, 2021. (*Also: public service, Nebraska football, driving fast and music from the 50s & 60s.)

Jim broke the mold upon his entrance into the world on September 5, 1946. His parents, Robert "Merle" Gordon and Sarah "Sally" Gordon, had four children: Connie, Janet, Sandra and baby boy Jim. Growing up, Jim attended Randolph Elementary, Lefler Junior High and Lincoln High School, where he served as manager of the football team (his mom wouldn't let him play football for fear he'd be hurt). Jim's other odd jobs included working on the Breslow dairy farm baling hay and helping with the herd; delivering newspapers; and working at Campbell's Nursery.

He was a Regent's Scholar recipient and attended UNL; however, he liked to say that for his first foray into higher education, he majored in playing pool and partying. This resulted in him being placed on academic probation, which led him to take a break from college and work full-time for the railroad. That lasted about six months, at which point he lost his college deferment and joined the Army (He always made a point of noting it was the U.S. Army).

A recipient of the Purple Heart, Jim served in the United States Army's First Air Cavalry Division and was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge for participating in more than 30 combat assaults. Thanks to years of target practice with his dad, Jim earned the Army's highest marksmanship ranking of "expert" during his military service. He was wounded in Vietnam in 1967 and spent 17 months in the hospital recovering from those wounds. While surgeons were able to save his right leg, the injuries required Jim to walk with a cane. The cane was, perhaps, Jim's second-most recognized characteristic, behind his notorious mustache.

When Jim returned to Lincoln, he tried college again, earning a bachelor's degree from UNL in 1972 as a Rhodes Scholarship finalist. While he earned a law degree in 1974, he had already entered the private practice of law as a certified senior law student in 1973. He was a practicing mediator and attorney until retiring in 2016, when he decided to give politics a go and run for the Nebraska Legislature. In addition to his law practice, Jim was passionate about helping people through eleemosynary work. (Jim had quite an extensive vocabulary and would use words like 'eleemosynary' without batting an eye.)

He was active in many civic organizations, including serving as National President and Chair of the Board of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America. Locally, Jim was an active member and/or lead of many boards-the Child Advocacy Center, Mediation Center, Legal Aid of Nebraska, Nebraskans for Public TV, Lincoln Children's Zoo, Leadership Lincoln, Foster Care Review Board and Parks & Recreation Advisory Board-just to name a few. (We hope you aren't bored from reading that truncated list).

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Connie, and several pets, most notably his Golden Retriever, Jessie. Jim and his beloved wife, Karen Kilgarin, share three daughters: Micala (Robert) Tessman practices law in Minneapolis; Shannon (Lapo) Torrini is a writer and corporate communications manager in Stamford, CT; Celeste (Sean Brennan) Torrence is a Registered Nurse in Lawrence, KS. Jim and Karen have four grandchildren: Yvette & Simonne Tessman, Quentin Torrini, and Scout Verna Jean Shipman.

Although we are sad that Jim has signed off on a life "generally well lived and with few regrets," we remember him fondly and know that he is kicking up gold dust with Sally, who surely greeted him with a fabulous hat on her head and a big smile on her face. Hopefully, he is also quite pleased with, and amused by, this exceedingly long obituary.

One way to honor Jim would be for you to go have a big cup of coffee (Jim drank extra-large mochas or coffee with far too much flavored creamer) with a friend and shoot the breeze about his antics or play a harmless prank on some unsuspecting sap. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Lincoln Zoo, the Mediation Center, TADA Productions, Child Advocacy Center and/or Legal Aid of Nebraska.

This past January I retired from the Legal Aid of Nebraska board of directors after spending 33 years on the board of LSSN, the Merger Board and Legal Aid of Nebraska. I do not believe I would have stayed without the influence of Jim when I first started on the board in 1988. His passion for helping Nebraskans who were in need of help served model which I tried to follow. At meetings he could say everything he wanted to say about some proposal with a roll of his eyes than any words could have said. I think about Jim often, and as someone who doesn't have many friends I miss him a lot.

In our early years I was in scouts with Jim, and later on we attended Lincoln High at the same time. I would visit with Jim at NU basketball games, where I was on the event staff, working directly behind where Jim had seats. I will miss seeing Jim.

I had the honor to work for Jim as his legal assistant in the mid '80's when my family first moved to Lincoln from Dallas, Texas. Jim's exuberance for life was infectious. His big-hearted smile and laugh, ever present. He enjoyed teasing me about my Texas drawl and never missed the opportunity to ask me if I was "fixin" to do something. I learned what "real" snow was from Jim. Coming from Texas, where life came to a full stop when it snowed even a couple of inches, I called Jim during the evening of our first snow for the season - we had gotten about an inch of snow. My call was to confirm that the office would be closed tomorrow due to snow. I think his laugh could probably be heard across town. His response was that the "flurries" we were seeing didn't even constitute a "flur" and that, no, the office would definitely be open. Ever the jokester, Jim tracked me down the next time it snowed big and there was 6 or 8 inches on the ground, to be sure that I knew - that really was snow. I can't forget how proud Jim was of his mother, Sally, and seeing how happy he was when they had the opportunity to go to lunch together. Jim was a true gentleman lawyer. I had the utmost respect for Jim, and truly enjoyed my years working for him. My sincere wishes for his family to find peace and rejoice in their lifetime of memories of a man who was truly larger than life. He will be missed by all who were fortunate to know him.

My deepest sympathies to Karen, their daughters & grandchildren as they all navigate this most difficult time in their lives ... I wish them only ongoing peace & serenity!!

I had the pleasure of being introduced to Jim Gordon @ my very first Juvenile Ct hearing, as a CPS Case Manager back in 1992 ... @ which time, he "delighted" in explaining to me that I shouldn't take how he was about to treat me personally since he was one of my parents' attorneys @ this time because the next time ... he might be my GAL & we would be in agreement, rather than having opposing points of view!!

He was absolutely right & as it turned out, we worked together for the next 10 years before I had to medically retire!! He continued to make each experience a true joy & was always willing to help teach me what I didn't quite know yet!!

It was my privilege to serve as member of the Board of Directors of Legal Services of Southeast Nebraska for with Jim for 12 years. I learned a great deal from him (most of which was good!) during those years.

Jim was one of the most caring individuals I have ever been around. No matter what, he always had a smile on his face and made the task at hand seem doable.

I had the pleasure of working with Jim during the first 4 years of my practice of law in the mid-80's. Jim was my mentor and friend as I learned the ends and outs of the Lancaster County courts. Jim was always supportive of my efforts not to screw up.
I was fortunate to stay in contact with Jim over the years. His bright smile and charming wit were always a welcomed highlight on those occasions.
Jim was an asset to the Lincoln and Nebraska bar. He made a positive difference for may of us. I will miss him.

My condolences to Jim's family, his many friends, and colleagues. Jim was a kind, caring, and compassionate man who treated everyone with dignity and respect. I always enjoyed seeing him at various events/activities/gatherings... he always greeted me with a firm handshake and a big smile. I appreciated his sense of humor and our conversations.. short but substantive and relevant...politics, Viet Nam, life.

Jim will be missed... he was a truly good man.

Although long absent from a seldom-visited hometown, I had an inexplicable ability, whenever back in Lincoln, to cross paths with Jim Gordon, who had once practiced law in the same firm as my late brother. Talking with Jim (and on one occasion with Karen as well) always reminded me of how much his wonderful approach to daily life paralleled that of my brother Ron. This marvelous obituary captures Jim's spirit so very nicely.

My condolences to Jim's family. May His Memory Be a Blessing.

Karen....you don´t know me but I´ve always admired you since your TV days. Dave & I both thought the world of Jim and, of course, his very special mom. Please know you have many who care......

Jim Gordon was smart, witty, genuine, funny, personable, dedicated, accomplished, and had about a hundred other great qualities about him. Although far too short, I´m so glad I had the opportunity to get to know and spend time with Jim at various stages of his life, starting in law school. Jim was always a colorful addition to the law practice. I never met a person who didn´t like Jim Gordon and I suspect I never will. You will be missed, Jim.

The world will miss a very special person. Rest in peace, Jim, you and your work will not be forgotten. Comfort and strength to each of his family members.
