Arthur Poppens Obituary

Poppens, Arthur Dean Age 91, died May 27, 2018 holding the hand of his loving wife Mary. Arthur was born November 7, 1926 in Princeton, Illinois to Peter and Anna (Plucker) Poppens. He was educated in Princeton schools, except for one year at Kemper Military School. He graduated from Princeton High School in 1944. He entered Northwestern University in 1943 in advance of his high school graduation, he attended Northwestern until induction into Military service in December 1944. He served in the U.S. Army until November 1946 in the U.S. and in Japan (Army of occupation). During his time in service, he trained in Japanese language at the University of Minnesota. After discharge from the Army, he returned to Northwestern University completing a Bachelor of Science degree in 1949 and an M.D. degree in 1952. He then spent five years at the Cook County hospital finishing both an internship and residency in surgery. He spent 21 years in surgical practice in Princeton, Illinois except for a three year tour with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). He served in East and South Asia/Oceania during that time. In 1978, he began practice in Texas in Emergency Medicine. He married Mary Ann Schlindwein in 1978. After four years in Emergency medicine, he resumed assignment with the CIA, serving in the United States, Africa, South Asia and Europe. He retired from the CIA in 1992. He spent his retirement living in Southern Wisconsin (Oconomowoc and Hartland) reading books, furthering his education, spending time with family, and traveling. Arthur will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 40 years, Mary and his children: Elizabeth (Mike) Denius, Christine Spencer, Deanne (Tim) Sayles, Timothy Poppens, Alexander Poppens, Eric Poppens, Hilary (Brad) Newell, and Peter (Nicole) Poppens. He will also be remembered by his thirteen grandchildren and sister Eleanor (Ivan) Skoog. His Memorial Service will be held Thursday May 31st at St. Mary's Episcopal Church (36014 Sunset Dr, Dousman, WI 53118) beginning at eleven AM. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church or the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
