Ellen Rickun Obituary

Rickun, Ellen Bernstein Born November 16, 1948, passed away on March 22, 2014, at the age of 65. Preceded in death by her parents Eliot and Fay Bernstein (nee Abrams). Ellen was born and raised in Milwaukee. She was a graduate of John Marshall High School and attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee before touring Europe and Israel. Ellen later moved to Madison to raise a family where she worked for 21 years as an educator for special needs students in the Madison Public Schools. She was known for her sense of humor, selflessness, compassion and thoughtful generosity. Above all, she had an uncanny ability to identify people's needs and make them feel wanted, appreciated, and loved. Ellen is survived by her step-mother Kathleen Bernstein; daughter Janet (Brian) Henning (nee Rickun); son Phillip Rickun; brothers Nathan (Shannon), Joshua (Aleyna) and Aaron (Dr. Deborah) Bernstein. Further survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, March 24, at Spring Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Wisconsin Humane Society or the Eliot M. Bernstein Education Fund at Jewish Museum Milwaukee. GOODMAN-BENSMAN Whitefish Bay Funeral Home 4750 N. I was so saddened to have learned of Ellen's passing last evening. Ellen was a dedicated worker and truly loved the students she worked with. Her sense of humor regularly made me smile - even in very hard situations. My condolences to her family.

Ellen and I worked together and played together in our twenties. We had so much fun. I miss her. My thoughts and prayers to her family.

I met Ellen in 1st grade where we were classmates at 53rd Street School. We traveled through all 12 grades together, remaining in the same homeroom until graduation. She always had a smile on her face and a compassionate place for everyone in her heart. I will never forget her kindness, her sweet disposition and her total sincerity. This is so tough to believe.

Ellen and I were high school "besties" and lived across the street from each other. Years separated us, but we did have an opportunity to connect prior to the last high school reunion. Ellen was unable to attend that reunion, but we agreed to see each other at the 50th to be held next year. The news of her passing brings immense sadness. She will be missed by many, but never forgotten. God bless her family and other friends.
