Marion Gilmore Obituary

Gilmore, Marion E. Age 94, died peacefully December 18, 2006. He was born in Burt, Iowa, March 30, 1912. Mr. Gilmore graduated from Wayne State College in 1937, received a Master's degree from Drake University in 1952 and an Administrator's Certificate from the University of Chicago in 1956. He taught and served as a principal in the Redfield and Clear Lake, Iowa schools. He came to Whitefish Bay in 1954 as principal of Richards School. He served for twenty-one years. He always said that the students, staff, and parents made him "look good" and claimed these twenty-one years as his "legacy." He retired in 1975, and continued to live in Whitefish Bay until 1986. He traveled in an RV for twenty-five years. "It was a wonderful way to see America." During his lifetime, he was active in the Avion Travelcade Club, Lions International Service Club, and Phi Delta Kappa. He also was a member of the National Elementary Principals' Association, the Whitefish Bay United Methodist Church, and the Wisconsin Retired Teachers' Association. He and his wife, Genevieve, moved to Mesa, Arizona in 1987 where they lived in Towerpoint Resort and Brentwood West. In July of 2002, he and his wife returned to Milwaukee to live at the retirement community of Alexian Village. Genevieve, his wife of sixty-four years, died on June 14, 2003. Also preceding him in death was his sister, Edna Litzel. He is survived by his son, Jon (Nancy); granddaughter, Kristin (Scott) Kohn; great-grandson, Beckett; grandson, Darren (Asha); great-grandsons, Jurrien and Quentin. Private family services are being held at Wisconsin Memorial Park. Because of his lifelong commitment to education, the family would appreciate that any memorials be sent to the Alexian Village Employee Scholarship Fund, 9301 N. 76th St., Milwaukee, WI 53223. "I have been blessed with a great life, a wonderful family, and a wealth of friendships." SCHMIDT & BARTELT A.A. Schmidt & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services Menomonee Falls (262) 251-3630

As a "fresh, just-out-of-school" young teacher I was fortunate enough to have been hired by Mr. Gilmore (I have never been able to call him Marion). His friendly, helpful manner provided a wonderful model for an inexperienced neophyte. I owe so much of my professional success to him and the rich learning environment he set the tone for at Richards School. His pride in the students, staff, school district, and Whitefish Bay was always foremost in his manner. His friendship, encouragement, and ongoing interest in my family and myself over the past 45 years will never be forgotten. I shall always be indebted to him and will remember him fondly.

Jon & Nancy - are thoughts and prayers are with you at the unexpected loss of your father this Christmas season. We only met you father a few times but we just got to know him better from his obituary and the 1st entry in the guest book. It sure sounds like he lived his dream and made a difference to the students. Peace to everyone.

I am a Richards School student of the class of 1970.

To a young, impressionable child, the principle of a school is often thought imagined as a stereotype- a mean spirted, authoritarian with odd physical charactersitics and speech. I never understood such stereotypes because the principle of my school, from kindergarden to my graduaton in the eigth grade, was, to me, not like this. My experience and image of a school principle was likeable person and role model; smiling, kneeling to the eye level of students, hands gesturing tryng to organize thought.

The 1960's was a challenging time for education in America and I always believed I was a part of a great school. I never thought the administrative roles should be anything but honest and human.

I went on to become a college teacher- with the same belief I had experienced as young student in a great school.
