The Example

HERE'S an example from
A Butterfly;
That on a rough, hard rock
Happy can lie;
Friendless and all alone
On this unsweetened stone.

Now let my bed be hard
No care take I;
I'll make my joy like this
Small Butterfly;
Whose happy heart has power
To make a stone a flower.

William Henry Davies,
Welsh poet (1871-1940)

Sometime in 1968-70, when Mark & I were dating, he wrote this poem out for me. He often did that – he’d write out poems, lyrics to our favorite songs, or some meaningful aphorism that he had read. He was very sweet, picking and choosing just the right words that captured the feelings of that moment in time.

He added the following lines at the end of the poem: “Ya know Mary, life is sorta like that hard rock … and we’re gonna be like that butterfly.”

That is the Mark I remember – a young man with a happy heart, a sweet, simple dreamer who longed to be a butterfly. May he now have that wish.

My sincere condolences to Mark's family.

I pray that God and the of our family who has passed will be there to greet Mark with open arms. I truly believe he tried as hard as humanly possible to overcome his life's challenges but the cross he carried became too heavy.

I love and will miss you bro.
