Samuel Sauceda Obituary

Sauceda, Samuel Paul Age 89, died peacefully in his home on April 4, 2016. Sauceda was born July 19, 1926 in Elgin, Il. to John and Jessie (nee Valdivia) Sauceda. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judith Ann Sauceda (nee Marx), his sons David (Bonnie) Sauceda and James (Lori) Sauceda, his daughters Laura (David) Koziol and Jean Sauceda, his brothers Peter and Arturo Sauceda, as well as his grandchildren Samuel, Alexander and Gabriella Koziol, Malia Sauceda, Joe Cavaluzzi, and Jeimmy and Camilo Sauceda. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Alfredo, John and Adolfo Sauceda, his sister, Ann Pena, his sister-in-law Sharon (Art) Sauceda and his brother-in-law Andres (Ann) Pena. Sauceda, the oldest of six siblings, was a star athlete at Elgin High School and earned all state honors in football and basketball. He was inducted into the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame in 1981. Sauceda was the first Hispanic to earn an athletic scholarship to Marquette University and played the 1944 football season before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany at the end of World War II. Upon returning from the war, he played four years of basketball at Marquette University (1947-1950) and an additional year of football in 1948. Sauceda, a six-time letter winner, was one of only four freshmen in Marquette history to letter in both football and basketball. After his senior year, he was the school's all-time leader in steals and second leading scorer in basketball. Following the 1949-50 season, he represented Marquette in the College Basketball All-Star game at Chicago Stadium. Sauceda served as Marquette's Athletic Director from 1969-73 and was also Chairman of the Athletic Board. A Spanish professor, Sauceda received his B.A. from Marquette University, a Master Degree of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Spanish) and a Doctorate from the University of Madrid (Spanish). He was a faculty member of the Foreign Language Department at Marquette University where he taught for 43 years and retired in 1997. He established the Marquette in Madrid Junior Year Abroad program in 1965 and served as its resident director. He also taught in Guadalajara, Mexico for eight years with the University of San Diego Summer Program. Sauceda cherished being a teacher and was an avid sports fan - proudly one of Marquette University's biggest supporters. He loved playing golf, being with family, attending summer festivals and cookouts and sitting in the patio shade with his wife Judy during late summer afternoons enjoying cocktails and each other's company. Services will be held on April 16, 2016 at Old Saint Mary Parish (844 N. Broadway, Milwaukee, WI 53202) with a gathering beginning at 9:30 AM followed by Mass at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to either Riverwest Food Pantry or Catholic East Elementary. Dear Sauceda Family Members,
I was fondly remembering Dr. Sauceda (fondly Sammy Sauceda to us) last night while texting with my M.D. brother (Chicago/Lake Geneva) concerning our great childhood Southern Wisconsin athletic memories which included our ritual of attending the great majority of most, if not all, of the basketball games of the semi-pro basketball team in our hometown of Fort Atkinson. The Blackhawks were the premier semi-pro team in the state at that time, and it was amazing to see them play and a true JOY seeing "Sammy" come all the way from the Milwaukee area to play with our small town team! I "followed" his career from afar over the years and was so proud to have "known" him. He surely accomplished a lot in his long, successful, academic and athletic careers and his Family Life!
God Bless you all and thanks for sharing "Sammy" with us in the late 1950's and early 1960's!
Fondly, Anthony (Tony) Ramsey, M.D.

dr. Sam Salcedo was one of my favorite instructors in Marquette University I was fortunate enough when I was flying for Pan-American to visit Dr. Sam and judy in Madrid and joined them and their two boys for an entire tour of Spain. I mean how lucky can one former student B. On a hunch I looked him up today January 30 and was surprised to find out he had died. My best thoughts go out to judy who was absolutely wonderful to me and my sister Virginia who went on to become a lawyer in San Francisco I finally remember the two boys but now I will start grieving the loss of my favorite actors Sauceda. Sending love to the family. Sam was a joyous person and he changed my life. I was a Spanish teacher for 30 years. My first job was at Marquette High School. Inspired by Sam, I thought teaching and learning were supposed to be fun. I know many were influenced by our wonderful time in the Madrid program.
Que vaya bien, Samuel

I am very sorry to learn of Dr. Sauceda's passing. I took his Spanish class at Marquette. He helped me develop language skills which took me to the Marquette in Madrid program he worked to establish, law school, and a legal career where I have made regular use of Spanish language skills. I admired his ability to teach and to practice law, in addition to so many other accomplishments at Marquette. Years have passed and I moved to Southern California. However, as I recently achieved a goal of teaching law school, in addition to my own law practice and alumni activities on behalf of Marquette, I remain deeply inspired by Dr. Sauceda's example. My condolences to friends and family.

I am so sad to hear of the passing of a beautiful person. He was filled with joy and radiated this to his students. I was privileged to be part of the group that went to Spain in 1865-66. Candace Dietz

My sincere sympathy to the Sauceda family. I was a student at Marquette and at the Marquette in Madrid program the second year that Dr. Sauceda was Resident Director. He was a wonderful teacher and led the program in Madrid that was life-changing for me. He and Judy were gracious hosts and helpers to the students, while raising four small children. He was warm and kind, and had a great sense of humor. I didn't know what a talented athlete he had also been. Dr. Sauceda left a great Marquette legacy.

April 13, 2016

On behalf of the entire Jack Doucette family, we offer our deepest sympathies.

Our fathers cherished their lifelong friendship, being classmates, being teammates, being alumni, being athletic fans and backers, being club members, and I'd like to think that was because both men shared a common decency and character, coupled with the desire to surround themselves with others of similar yoke.

I had the honor of being taught by Sam, and continue to be honored by my friendship with his sons Dave and Jim, who were my classmate throughout MUHS & MU.

As a result, we share a lifelong friendship and communion, partly in their honor, partly to show respect, but also born from the decency and character they bestowed upon us.

God's speed to Sam, he has finished the race and kept the faith, and may the good Lord hold each of you gently in the palm of his hand, as you grieve his passing.

April 12, 2016

My Brother-in law Sam will be remembered as a caring father and husband. His children were his pride and joy, was able to see that they all received an education. His wife Judy was his best friend. Shared many memorable occasions.
Please accept Eloy's and my sincere condolences on your loss.
You sister, Marion
