Michael Dean Vann Sr.

Michael Vann Obituary

Vann, Captain Michael Dean Sr. The first children born from the loving union of John and Dorcas Vann was a set of identical twin boys. The oldest, Michael Dean, arrived on December 3, 1962. Michael grew up in Wichita, where he received his primary education in the Wichita Public School system. He ultimatley graduated from Southeast High School with the Class of 1982. During his high school years, he participated in football and track. During this formative period of his life, being part of a God-fearing family, Michael was baptized at the age of seven and served the Lord faithfully at Emmanuel Pentecostal Temple, under the leadership of his mother, Reverend Dorcas Vann. It was during high school when Michael became interested in funeral service. After high school, Michael matriculated to Kansas City, Kansas Community College to pursue a degree in Mortuary Science. Michael began his career at Jackson Mortuary, under the guidance of Val and Gene Jackson's mentorship. While in college, he served apprenticeship at Thatcher's Funeral Home in Kansas City, Kansas as well as Bowser-Johnson Funeral home in Topeka. After returning to Wichita, Michael began to flourish in funeral service and also accepted a position with the Sedgwick County Fire Department. This October would have been 20 years of service with the Department. In 1998, Michael began his own funeral home after purchasing the Citizens Funeral Home. He was a caring and compassionate funeral director to the families that he served. Working from Station 32, Captain Vann will be remembered by his fellow fire fighters, who were his extended family. After blessing us for 43 years, Michael Dean Vann, Sr., left this life for a life eternal on Thursday evening, February 23, 2006 from Wichita, Kansas. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marsha and Cynthia. He leaves in God's care; his sons, Michael Vann, Jr., and wife, Marisa and 1 grandchild, Michael A. Vann (Jr.Jr.), Las Vegas, Nevada and Jonathan Vann, of the home in Wichita, Kansas; his parents, Mr. John and Reverend Dorcas Vann, Wichita, Kansas; his brothers, Marcus and wife Stephanie Vann and William and wife Michelle Vann, all of Wichita, Kansas; his sister, Elizabeth and husband Robert McMeans, Wichita, Kansas; his companion, Shantay Lyons; along with a caravan of other relatives, friends, his church family from Iasis Christian Center, the Sedgwick County Fire Department and the staff of the Vann-Eldridge Funeral Services. The Celebratory Worship Service for Captain Michael Vann will be shared on Saturday, March 4, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. in the Messiah Baptist Church, 12200 East 21st Street. Reverend Mark Hoover, the gracious host Pastor, District Elder Robert Martin, Zion Temple Pentecostal Church of Denver, Colorado, The Officiant and Pastor William Vann, Iasis Christian Center, Eulogist. Casket bearers will be the Sedgwick County Fire Department. The Christian Committal will follow in Lakeview Cemetery. Mr. Robert Bethea, Vann-Eldridge Funeral Services and Mr. Gene Jackson, Jackson Mortuary, will be the directors in charge of the funeral services, assisted by the Vann-Eldridge Funeral Service Staff and the Keith D. Biglow Funeral Directors, Inc., of Oklahoma, Staff. Friends are asked to assemble at the Church by 10:45 A.M. on Saturday morning.

To the vann family
Weaping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. There are no words that I can say to describe Michael Vann. I remember the first time I encountered Michael, and still today I can remember those eyes and that broad smile. But what I miss the most is the encouraging words he would always have at the right time. He could make you smile even when you didnt want to, and he would always make me believe in myself. I will always miss him but I will never forget him.

I just wanted to say that we love you & miss you!

Mikey, I am missing you so much right now. I cannot believe that it's been over a year, going on 2 without my friend to talk things over with. I miss you my buddy.

Over the past year, I have found myself missing my friend, and wishing I could call to share a special victory or accomplishment. I just recently deleted your phone number from my cell, thinking that just maybe the pain would be less. But when one has been a friend, the way you were a friend to me, the pain of knowing you're not here never goes away. I miss talking to you about everything Mike. I miss laughing about old school memories. I miss you, my friend. May you rest in eternal peace.

To Michael's family and co-workers, I am so sorry to learn of your loss. I went to Mortuary School with Michael back in the 1980's in Kansas City. He was obviously a young man who loved his family and the life God had given him here. Why this tragedy has happened is unknown to us now, however, I will be keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers. (Marlan Hoffman - Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, Parsons, Kansas)

Death is so limited

It cannot cripple Love

It cannot shatter Hope

It cannot eat away Peace

It cannot destroy Confidence

It cannot kill Friendship

It cannot suppress Memories

It cannot silence Courage

It cannot invade the Soul

It cannot conquer the Spirit

It cannot destroy Eternal Life

Capt. Vann will be missed.

Mike always had a positive attitude. Remembering back to 2/11/06 at about 8AM, Myself and Firefighter Chaffin (SQUAD 12) had worked thru the night at the grass fire in Burton KS. That early morning I was tired and just ready to get back to Wichita when Capt. Vann and his crew showed up to relieve our crews. He had his smile on and looked eager to get out there and do his part in stomping out the grass fires.

Michael and his family will be in our prayers.

In 1999, I visited Vann-Gettis Funeral Services to make arrangements for my dear aunt. I met with Michael Vann, a consummate professional who was patient, kind and compassionate. He refused to discuss finances until I was comfortable with the arrangements I had made. I am forever grateful and thankful for the services provided by Michael Vann, Doug Gettis and the staff from Vann-Gettis. My prayer is that God will return favor on the Vann family and shower you with condolences, comfort, peace, strength and hope for the days ahead. His grace is sufficient to see you through.

As a future funeral director myself, I wish to extend my sympathies to the family at this time. I did not know Mr. Vann, but know that as a funeral director, he blessed the lives of those he served, as well as those he served as a fire fighter. God bless you Michael Vann, and your family.

If I may, I wish to share a scripture from the Book of Mormon, which has brought me great joy and happiness. In Alma chapter 40 verses 11 and 12-----"Now, concerning the state of the soul between death and the resurrection-behold it has been made known unto me by an angel, that the spirits of all men, as soon as they are departed from this mortal body, yea, the spirits of all men, whether they be good or evil, are taken home to that God who gave them life.

And then shall it come to pass that the spirits of those who are righteous are received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest, a state of peace, where they shall rest from all troubles and from all care and sorrow."

May the Spirit be with you as you bid a temporary farewell to a good man this weekend and in the weeks and months to come.
