Agnes Sax Obituary

Agnes L. (Babe) Sax, 77, of Shawnee, KS died June 23, 2007 at Kansas City Hospice House. Babe was born August 31, 1929, to Matt and Elizabeth Evans of Altus, Ark. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin B. Sax, in 1992. Agnes drove school bus for A.T. Meyers and Sons in the Shawnee Mission, Kan., school district for 28 years while raising her family. She also volunteered for many years at Shawnee Community Services. Survivors include daughters Alice Yett of Krum, TX; Susan Jarsulic of Shawnee, KS; Janet Prideaux of Overland Park, KS; and Julia Sax of Independence, MO.; and one son, Mark Sax of Merriam, KS. Agnes also leaves nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Mary's Church in Altus, Ark., with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either Kansas City Hospice House at 12000 Wornall, Kansas City, Mo 641451117 or Dreams Work, Inc. at 13717 W. 108th St., Lenexa, KS 66215. Dreams Work is an adult day program founded by Agnes' daughter Susan for Mrs. Sax's granddaughter, Jayne Jarsulic, and other severely disabled young adults. Found in Mom's tiny cedar chest was this yellowed newspaper clipping quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson: "To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded." Mom always said God was good to her family.

Where to begin about Alvin and Babe... The Friday nights to Atchison when Babe drove the bus? Oh, the stories she would tell. I can remember wishing my kid's bus drivers were as fair as Babe. The few things that stick out in my mind about going to their house... the long bench at the kitchen table and the plastic dogs that had their place on the corner shelves in the family room. How I loved playing with all the cool toys. I can remember the camper out in the driveway, how huge it was. Let's not forget the garage full of Babe's bargins... waiting to be resold at a garage sale. Did she ever have that sale??? Memories are wonderful, they are what helps us get from one day to the next. Treasure the memories and let your tears be from fond memories rather than her last days. My prayers are with you all.

I am so sorry to learn of Agnes' passing. I remember her as a sweet and caring lady from my days as a teacher at Trailridge. She often drove my students on long field trips. She was a joy to be with. May her memory be a blessing for her loving family.
