Anthony Porto Obituary

Our friend, husband, father, man-who-was- something-to- everybody, a larger- than-life figure, Anthony F. Porto, Jr., or as you probably knew him, "the Doc," joined his friends and loved ones who predeceased him after suffering cardiac arrest Saturday, June 21, 2008. He was 57. Born October 2, 1950 in Des Moines (Beaverdale), Iowa, the Doc attended Holy Trinity grade school, Dowling High School, Creighton University for his undergraduate and medical degrees and then completed his medical residency at University of Kansas Medical School. The boy from Beaverdale was wise beyond his degrees and shared a bit of his brilliance with everyone. This was to be his thirtieth year in practice. As he would say: "Pretty good for a chubby, little ear-doctor from Beaverdale." More than anything, the Doc loved people. He loved his friends. He loved his family. He loved meeting new people. He was one of the great talkers of our time. Whether it was telling an entertaining story, performing a well- planned practical joke, or talking to you while cleaning out your ears at his medical practice, the Doc touched all of us and brought laughter to all our lives. He will be missed by more than we'll ever know. He was also a believer. He believed in each person he met, just as he believed in his favorite team, the Royals. He believed in his family. He believed in all of us. Remember: What would Dockie do? He is survived by his incredibly strong wife, Mary, of the home; parents, Dr. Anthony F. and Mrs. Genevieve Porto, Sr., of Des Moines, Ia.; children, Tony III, Nick and wife Christina, Stacy and Tom, all of Kansas City; grandchildren, Rosemary (Rosebud) and Charlie Porto (Charlie Boy), both of Kansas City…and many more to come; sisters and brothers, Kathleen (Bill) Lillis, Cecelia (Mike) Kent, Steve Porto, Dennis (Janice) Porto, all of Des Moines, and Michelle (Doug) Nemmers, of Kansas City. Visitation begins at 9:00 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial to begin at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 24th at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 1001 E. 52nd Street, Kansas City, MO. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. In lieu of contributions, the family suggests making someone laugh today. We love you Doc. Arrangements: McGilley State Line Chapel, 816-942-6180.

My family is so saddened by Tony's passing.  He was the only one who could properly diagnose our son Derek's cochlear nerve damage.  From that diagnosis on, Tony took a special interest in Derek's health, as well as Derek's successes after getting his hearing aids.Tony was a true gentleman, and a caring human being.  We will moarn his passing.Mary, God Bless you and your family. The McCallums

Please accept my belated condolences for the loss of one of the dearest men I have every had the pleasure to meet. I was a patient of Dr. Porto, as was my son. He always amazed us with his sincere and caring "chair side manner". Never missing an opportunity to catch up on our life activities and remembering details I didn't even recall sharing with him. The appointment was almost incidental compared to the compassion he shared with us. We are deeply saddened to learn of your lose. I am sure you have a plethora of extraordinary happy and loving memories. God Bless

Dear Mary and the Porto family,
Just before leaving the PING factory yesterday I ran into John Ward, always an enjoyable experience, except yesterday, as he told me the terribly sad news about Tony. Besides growing up at the same golf course in Des Moines, one of my most enjoyable memories with Tony was a round of golf we shared with our sons in Phoenix. He was a gifted' individual. I can only hope that the Lord will grant you and the family the ability to cope with the loss of Tony.

the Doc was the most incredible man that ever lived. You can read this guest book for yourself and see the variety of people that he touched. The Big T was our rock and made us strong. I will never forget you Dad.

Dr. Porto always made you feel welcome in his office. If you grabbed a piece of candy, he always asked if you would take another. He had a great and caring staff that made you feel welcome as well.

I was a new patient of Dr. Porto, but as you know, one visit was all it took for me to know his kindness.

I have had a very difficult year trying to recover after an emergency c-section brought my son into the world on Christmas Eve of last year. (including 2 blood transfusions, pancreatitis, gal bladder removed, shingles, severe anemia, plantar fasciitis and every other infection that comes along due to my depleated immune system -- not to mention I have a brand new baby at home.)

On the day I meet Dr Porto, I had severe pain in my throat and could not find anyone who cared enough to see me right away. I stared at the list of ENT's through tears and seriously considered checking myself into the hospital because I could not take one more bit of pain.

When I called Dr. Porto's office they said he could see me as soon as I could get there.

When I arrived he assured me it was just an infection and that the medication he perscribed would have me feeling better in just a couple of days. He had just met me and I already felt like a valued patient.

I left with a warm feeling in my heart and a new outlook for the day -- this too would pass.

I will always smile when I think of Dr. Porto.

I am deeply saddened and shocked to hear of Dr. Porto's passing. My heartfelt sympathies to Dr. Porto's family and staff during this difficult time. I was a longtime, frequent patient of Dr. Porto's. His son Tony referred me to Dr. Porto when Tony and I were in law school together. Dr. Porto and his staff always put a smile on my face even when I had a bad sinus infection. At every visit Dr. Porto enthusiastically asked me about my family, my job, and life in general and he always had a proud story to tell about one of his kids or grandkids. He was a devoted, jolly, caring doctor who always went the extra mile for his patients. I will miss him dearly.

Mary, Tony III and the rest of the Porto's-

As is evident by now, Tony touched the lives of many different people in many different and wonderful ways. I have always admired Tony's ability to embrace and fully enjoy all that life and human interaction can bring. I remember a truly great 48 hour golf trip to Pebble Beach and Cyprus Point that Tony lined up for himself and some golf buddies with his usual panache. It all seemed so effortless with Tony, and there are many, many people who benefitted from his wisdom, his wit and his kindness. All those who knew Tony will hold him fondly in their hearts always.

My sympathies to you all in this challenging time.

I have been a patient of Dr. Porto for nearly fifteen years and was completely floored today when I heard the news of his passing. He was one of the kindest, most genuine people that I have ever met and could put a smile on your face when you were feeling your worst. Doc always had time to ask me how my family was doing and took a genuine interest in you as a person not just a patient. He was an excellent doctor and a great friend who will be dearly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

I am saddened by Doc's passing as he was truly a fine human being. He touched so many of us in so many ways and he will be truly missed by all who knew him. He always made me feel like I was a part of his family from the first day that I met him and for that I am eternally grateful. His kindness was always there, whether it be welcoming me to the Lake for the weekend, inviting me to the Royals home opener, treating me as a patient, or just talking with me for a few minutes. He always wanted everyone to feel welcome. His great kids and wife are a tribute to the man Doc was. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Porto Family.

My dear Mary, Please know how very saddened I continue to be by the news of Tony. I fondly remember how gracious the two of you were in Omaha. I was so grateful for your kindnesses while you both shared dinners with me in your home or allowed me to hitch a ride to Des Moines when I was so very homesick while at Creighton. Know how missed Tony will be! I hope that you and your children and their families come visit us, stay in our home, and help us to embrace Tony and his memory! We love all of you so very much! To the Porto Family,
I'm only known Dr. Porto for about 1 yr. but the first time I met him I knew he was a good person. He was so friendly and concern about my condition. The last conversation I had with him he ask me what's up and before I could say anything he replied "The River".
God is in control of all things and he will take care of you .

Tony was the first call I made when my Dad died in May of 2006. As he was fighting back the tears he simply told me that "today we lost one of the great ones." Tony was the kind of man who made me want to be a better man. My entire family are better people for having shared some of his life. He leaves behind an amazing legacy and ought to be proud of everything he accomplished. I loved him like a father, and the world is a lesser place without him.

We are all saddened to hear of Tony's death. As a teen and young adult he would hang with dad (Noah)
in the racing garage and they would "work on" the race cars.
He would stop at the end of our dock and check to see if anyone would want a cruise. Then he was in med school and quite busy. He was so excited to introduce Mary to all of us and his being in love was evident!
The birth of every child excited him and he was so content with being a son, brother, husband, and dad. The day after Thanksgiving was a tradition for the Porto guys at Noah's Ark in DSM. I always looked up to him as we were growing up at Holy Trinity. All of us (Lacona's) are saddened by his death. We all have our memories of the great guy Tony-
Grade and high school, Clear Lake, auto-racing, neighbor and friend.
May peace find its way to all of your hearts.

Doc Porto was indeed a great storyteller, as well as a tremendous listener. Having been in his office just a few weeks ago, we sat and listened to each others' updates on our families' latest happenings. I will forever be grateful for knowing Dr. Porto. Not only was he the first doctor I could find to control my horrible allergies, he was the warmest, most genuine, funny person I had ever met. I could walk into his office grumpy and miserable from a sinus infection and by the time I left already feeling better just for the conversation I had with him. He always put a smile on my face.
With each visit, I looked forward to reading the "Quote of the Day" chalk board and chatting with his gals Jane and Susan.

My heart goes out to his family whom I never met but feel like I know from all of the wonderful stories he has shared over the years.

I am so deeply saddened. I know I am a better person for having known the doc but I am really, really going to miss him.

Dr. Porto was a great inspiration to me. He has been my father and mine's ENT doc for several years. I told him I wanted to go to medical school my senior year in high school, and that I was considering Creighton. He took the time out of his day to talk to me about my decisions and wrote a recommendation letter on my behalf (I was later awarded a scholarship based on this letter). I was also accepted to UMKC's 6 year med program and this is where I chose to go. Every time I would come in his office he would ask me how it was going and we would talk about the classes we would never take again. He told me to keep pushing through and working hard. I was just in his office this past Tuesday, June 17th. The last words he told me after telling me to say hi to my parents for him were, "You are going to be a great doctor, you think so clearly." Dr. Porto can never know how much I looked to his wisdom, his advice, and his attributes for leadership. I know he has left a footprint on my heart and is the everlasting inspiration for the kind of physician I aspire to be. In short, he is an amazing man who touched so many lives. I was blessed to know him. My condolences to his family and God bless.
