C. WHITTAKER Obituary

C. Keith Whittaker, MD, was born into eternal life on Friday, October 7, 2011 surrounded by the people who meant most to him in this life. Dr. Whittaker was born September 4, 1932, the son of Justice Charles E. Whittaker and Winifred Pugh Whittaker. He was raised in Kansas City, attending St. Elizabeth grade school and Rockhurst High School. During high school he met his match, his mate, and his guiding love, Patricia Collins, the woman who would share his wonderful journey for the remainder of his life. He attended Princeton University, then medical school at Northwestern University, and residency in neurosurgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Following a two-year assignment with the U.S. Air Force in San Antonio, he returned to KU to finish his training. He practiced mainly at St. Luke's Hospital, but was on staff at several area hospitals. His skill as a surgeon, his dogged pursuit of proper diagnosis, and his complete intolerance of anything short of perfection were legendary in the medical community. He touched many lives in his career, as a healer, a mentor, and a teacher. His superior intellect and pursuit of excellence belied the humble man who never forgot that his extraordinary talents were gifts from a generous God. Although he was devoted to his role as a doctor, his true passion was family, with whom he spent all of his time away from work. He and Pat raised seven children and were blessed with 23 grandchildren. Family dinners, whether here in Kansas City or at any of the numerous locations where he delighted to travel with his family, were a treasure that resulted in many happy meals and memories which we carry with us in his absence. Though he suffered in his final years, no complaint or self-pity was ever heard from his mouth. To know him was a gift, to love him a treasure. Those of us who knew and loved him carry an imprint on our hearts and we are richer for the experience. Keith was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Gary, and his son Brian, who are rejoicing at being reunited. He leaves to miss his enormous presence his wife of 57 years, Pat, sons Tom (Lissa), John (Anne), and Martin, daughters, Ann Lindboe (Dan), Laura Gibson (Bob), and Mary Coit (Ken), and the 23 grandchildren who loved their Papa as a playmate and prankster. Friends may call on the family at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 5250 Mission Road, Roeland Park, KS, on Tuesday, October 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Agnes Catholic Church on Wednesday, October 12, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Sisters, Servants of Mary, 800 N. 18th St., KCK 66102, Rockhurst High School, 9301 State Line Rd. I was a 12 year old boy in great pain with a condition that multiple Doctors failed to diagnose. Dr. Whitaker then became involved and correctly diagnosed my condition as a rare osteomyelitis staff infection between two discs in my lower back. I not only remember his competency but also how he kept after me to keep up with my schoolwork while hospitalized. I just learned of his passing and felt the need to say something in memory of a fine physician and man.

Dr. Whittaker was indeed a perfectionist.about 30 years ago my daughter was in an auto accident. We were told she would never move again, her neck was broken.Dr. Whittaker operated, came out and told us the operation was a sucess, she would live but had no chance of movment. He then told us he would like to operate again immediatly, that he was not totaly satisfied with the operation. Of course we said yes , operate. A few weeks later my daughter moved her little finger! Slowly she regained full control of her movements. As she progressed Dr. Whittaker operated again. I recall nurses being warned when the doctor entered the hospital to double check his patients and make sure everything was as he wanted.
Today she is married has 3 children and has full movement, God Bless you Doctor Whittaker, we have lost a great phyisician.

Dear Pat and family
I met Keith in the Fall of 1949 when I entered Rockhurst High and he was a senior. He has always been the epitome of "class" in every arena of life. He saved my dad's life in 1973 after an auto accident and gave him 13 more years of life. May the Lord reward him as only the Lord can do! May each of you know the closeness of the Lord at this hard time of closing a long and storied chapter of family history. May we trust that we will renew the bonds of friendship with Keith when the Lord takes us home; until, he is close to our hearts and in our prayers

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Please accept my condolences. I was a patient of Dr. Whittaker around 1992. He performed an emergency back operation on me about 11:00 pm. I'm sure he could have waited the following day to operate, but he was a dedicated doctor and new it could not wait. Thanks to his dedication I was able to fully recover and returned to work and raise my family. He was truly a fine human being and great a doctor. Thanks. DBotello.

I am so sorry to hear of this tremendous loss. I can still hear Dr Whittaker telling fabulous stories with family and friends at your breakfast table after choir on Sunday mornings. Those are some great memories. Thoughts and prayers come from my family to yours. Love to all, Maura Houston (and Helena) and Jim Rennell.

Pat and Family, I am so sad to hear of Dr. Whittaker's passing. I remember so very well how dedicated he was to his family and also to his work saving and improving lives. His legacy will live on through the numerous students he mentored. As a former employee, I know he could be "tough", but underneath that exterior was more compassion than any one human should have! Praying for peace and comfort for you during this time.
