Cadence Whittier Obituary

Cadence Whittier
July 2, 1977 - October 10, 2021
Geneva, New York - Cadence Joy Whittier, 44, passed from this life on October 10, 2021 after a courageous five year battle against metastatic breast cancer. She was raised by her parents, Michael and Diane Whittier in Shawnee, Kansas where she graduated from Shawnee Mission Northwest H.S. in 1995. She received her B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Dance from the University of Utah where she met her husband Dustin Cutler. They were married June 2, 2001 at Powell Gardens.
For two decades, Cadence was a Professor in the Dance Department at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York where she touched the lives of thousands of students, colleagues and friends through her teaching, performance artistry, choreography and activism in the greater Finger Lakes community. Cadence was one of the youngest people to be granted tenure at the colleges. In 2016 she was awarded the Faculty Prize for Teaching, and in 2019 she was awarded the Engaged Faculty Member of the year. Also in 2019 she was the recipient of the William R. Kenan Endowed Professorship. Cadence was a co-director and core faculty member of Integrated Movement Studies, an organization that offers national and international training in Laban/Bartenieff Fundamentals. She is also the author of an innovative book, Creative Ballet Teaching: Technique and Artistry for the 21st Century Ballet Dancer (Routledge,2018).
Cadence truly enjoyed the beauty of nature. During her lifetime, she liked to hike, snow ski, kayak and bicycle. She and Dustin were avid backpackers and their many adventures took them hiking through the mountain west, Hawaii, Canada, New Zealand and their beloved Utah. They also visited countries on four different continents. At home in Geneva, New York, she loved the home that she and Dustin renovated which overlooks Lake Seneca. She found joy in creating a large, lovely garden and in surrounding herself with art created by friends, family and pieces collected on her travels. She is survived by her husband, her parents, her brother Casey and his family as well as by many aunts, uncles and cousins. Cadence cherished her family and her many close friends who were like her second family. Her smile, her laughter, her intelligence and her kindness will be greatly missed by all who her knew her. A Memorial will be held at a later, safer time. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that you send contributions to Metavivor.org.

I am MSc Dance Science researcher. It is very sad to hear that Cadence passed away last year.
I have been researching creativity and artistry in the ballet class and came across Cadence's Whittier research and books. I am an RAD ballet teacher, and I am interested in integrating her ideas, which are fantastic, into ballet training. I am in the process of applying for a post doctorate at Trinity Laban to explore this very topic.
Please accept my condolences.

I was one Cadence's nurses caring for her in the Hospice/Palliative Care Unit of Strong Memorial Hospital where she ultimately passed away. It's been a year now, but she remains in my heart and memory. Her kindness, beauty, and grace were impressive.

I am profoundly sorry to hear of the loss of this amazing woman. I only learned yesterday of her passing. Cadence was diagnosed with breast cancer one year after I was. My heart aches for her family. She was truly a lovely, lovely person. I will miss seeing her and being inspired by her. My deep condolences to her family.

Cadence's smile, laughter, and enthusiasm made any gathering of friends more joyful. I have fond memories of our high school ski and camping trips, school dances, and dinner outings to Applebees (where the rest of us would eat hamburgers and french fries, and Cadence, out of dedication to her dance training, would order plain chicken breasts and steamed vegetables. :-) As friends we were always so proud to see her perform in the Nutcracker Ballet! Cadence touched so many lives, including mine. My deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and students.

I had the privilege of being one of the lucky nurses to have taken care of Cadence. I was in awe of her always sweet and graceful demeanor despite the challenges she faced. Her lovely family are special people as well.

I will always remember Cadence and her infectious laugh. The way she would run and play with the kids at Larry and Susan's house. You would never know if she wasn't feeling well because all the kids just wanted to play with Aunt Cadence and she wouldn't disappoint them. She was a thoughtful listener as I would catch several glimpses through the years of her speaking with her Grandma Flo or her Great Aunt Mary. She will be missed. I'm so very sorry for this terrible loss Diane, Mike and Casey. You'll always miss her but oh what special memories you have of her.

I am so sorry to hear of her passing. I still remember her smile from high school and watching her dives at the swim & dive meets. I thought of her often over the years as I watched my own daughter grow up dancing. I remember her showing us her toes. Wishing her friends and family peace in this time of grief.

While I never had the pleasure of knowing Cadence, I learned much about her lyrical spirit from conversations with Diane. Pilates was a new concept for me, but Cadence's interest in it brought me into "the know." I'm very sorry to hear of the lose of her bright light. I know she will be deeply missed.
