DANIEL STECHSCHULTE Obituary

MD Daniel J. Stechschulte, Sr., consummate husband, father, and physician died July 14, 2011, age 74. His six children, Daniel Jr., Susan, Stephen, Mary, Ann, and Edward, will remember him for his pragmatism, smile, and unswerving love. He intoned them to, "Make a decision and move on. Don't look back." He lived and died in that manner. His colleagues from St. Louis University Medical School where he graduated in 1962, at Harvard Medical School where he was a fellow and faculty member for seven years, and at the University of Kansas School of Medicine where he was a Professor for 38 years, will remember his dedication, his dependability, his integrity, and his expertise. His patients will remember a man committed to their well being. His dear wife, Helen, will remember a devoted husband, a perfect father, and her best friend for over 50 years. Daniel was born in a farmhouse without running water outside Kalida, Ohio on August 20, 1936. He worked on the family farm through high school and dreamed of pitching in the major leagues. Pragmatically, he accepted the University of Dayton's offer to play basketball and baseball with the stipulation that he could major in chemistry and hopefully attend medical school. That decision reflected his foresight, that science not athletics would be the foundation of his professional life. For him it was the most worthy goal, to make science and objective analysis a path that would lead to understanding and healing. He was never dogmatic with his family or students unless to emphasize that hard work and intense thought were necessary for great achievement. For him, that goal was furthering the fields of allergy, immunology, and rheumatology. He valued personal growth as much as professional success, the latter only valid if one's family flourished in the process. He remained a devoted member of Cure of Ars Church, first as an original member of the Family Mass Program in 1973 and later as a Eucharistic minister until his disease, metastatic carcinoid tumor, physically overwhelmed him. True to form, he grappled with his illness until the end. His ability to give was boundless. He was always there for his patients, his students, his colleagues, and especially his wife and his family. Dan will live on in his children and eighteen grandchildren. The strife of our world would be lessened if we could emulate his selflessness, his joyfulness, and his humility. He tamped down ego, jealousy, and vanity to build a sanctuary and community for his family, friends, colleagues, and patients. From those who knew him, his family asks that they honor him by living a productive, unprejudiced life, free of malice, full of love. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at Cure of Ars Catholic Church at 9401 Mission Road, Leawood, Kansas on August 20 at 11 a.m., with visitation from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Sister Servants of Mary in Kansas City, Kansas, the Vianney Fund for the Poor at Cure of Ars, and to Harvesters. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.CremationCenterKC.com. C

Dr. Stechschulte was a great teacher. He always exuded a tremendous sense of calm on rounds. He had the ability to provoke a good medical discussion with just a few words. I enjoyed my rotation in Rheumatology because of him.

Dan exemplified the best qualities of both an effective clinician and teacher. He encouraged colleagues to be their best. I never attended a meeting he presided over without coming away owning new ideas and with greater enthusiasm for our specialty.

My heart sank when I heard the news of the of one of the greatest mentors and physicians passing. I had the honor of working with Dr. Stechschulte for nearly three years. Never have a met a such a kind, brilliant, and humble person. He was widely loved and sought after as one of the greatest in his field in the country. Patients traveled from all over the country searching for answers only he could provide. He was an absolute joy to work with and for. He inspired me to make the career change to a clinical provider. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family.

Dr. Stechschulte was a "consummate physician" with an inspiring intellect and ability to think outside the box. He figured out with a glance at my chart (while talking to me about the recent Nobel laureates in economics) what several doctors for several years could not figure out, and he had a simple fix, so that my husband and I could have children. I was not at that visit to discuss fertility problems, but that did not matter as, most fortunate for us, Dr. Stechschulte was holistic in his thinking. My husband and I have two beautiful boys, ages 7 and 3. We will always be grateful to Dr. Stechschulte. Our most heartfelt condolences to his family.

I worked with Dr.Stech.in the out- patient clinic at KU for 10 years. He was by far the kindest, most cordial, and pleasant Dr. I have ever worked with in my many years of nursing. Even when the day was ending after seeing many patients he was always pleasant and courteous to all his patients and to all working with him. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. He was a wonderful person. God Bless .

Adjusting to a world without Dr. Stechschulte going to be difficult. He was my physician at KUMC for over thirty years. He diagnosed and treated my symptoms when others had not known what was going on or what to do and he also advised me on other medical issues before I made any decisions. I doubt I would have been able to enjoy life the way I have without his intelligent and kind care these past years. He took very good care of me. When I was in the hospital I always felt comforted when he came in the room. He had such a nice, big smile. I want to send my sympathy and condolences to his wife and family.

My condolences to the family of Dr. Dan Stechschulte. He was a brilliant doctor and a very likeable person, a combination not always found in doctors. I feel I owe him quite a lot for the quality of my life. After several years of rounds of doctors trying to find out what was wrong with me, Dr. Stechschulte diagnosed me with an autoimmune disease, and later Lupus. He prescribed a drug regimen that stopped my constant pain...I was amazed. I am so glad he was my doctor and I will miss him dearly.

I am so sorry for the loss suffered by Dr. Stechschulte's family, and also by his patients and the entire medical community. Dr. Stechschulte's brilliant diagnostic skills and ability to find appropriate drugs to manage and lessen the severity of my symptoms basically saved my life. Before I started going to him, I ended up in Intensive Care with life-threatening anaphylaxis twice. After starting his protocol of treatment, I was able to avoid these near-death experiences. I am very grateful to him not only for his medical skills, but for his kindness and basic human decency. It's really nice (and, sadly, not that usual) to find a doctor who treats you as a person first, not just an "interesting case." I really missed being under his care during his medical leave. I am so glad he worked in a teaching hospital, so that he was able to pass his vast knowledge on to so many medical students and residents, making this world a far better place.

My deepest sympathies to Dr.Stechschulte's family. He became my doctor in January 2004 when I was told that I had Lupus,if it hadn't been for him taken the time to help me get through this then I wouldn't know where I would be today. He has always had a great smile even when I couldn't smile for myself. Taught me how to manage my meds. and to look for brighter days to come.I will miss you dearly my friend may God bless you on your next life.

My deepest sympathies to Dr. Stechschulte's family. He became my allergist about 4 years ago at KU Med and diagnosed a chemical allergy that no other doctor had been able to pinpoint.

Though with his experience he had likely seen every thing possible, his intellectual curiosity would not allow him to assume what might be causing my problem. After researching and testing me, he spent an amazing amount of time to teach me about my allergy and called in all of the interns and residents so they could learn from my case. In this day and age, it is rare to find a doctor with Dr. Stec's character, compassion and thirst for learning.

May God bless his family and keep them all in His gracious, loving hands.

Tears are streaming down my face with the news that Dr. Dan Stechschulte has passed away.
He was truly an incredible person, physician, and mentor.
As my mentor, I learned so much from him when I was an intern and resident at KUMC 1977-1980.
As my physician from 1985-1989 I learned first-hand what I already knew, that he was a tremendously caring physician.
And what a wonderful person, always cheerful and interested in others and loved his work. He helped as a consultant on many of my patients through the years, and one day a couple of years ago I asked about his schedule, thinking perhaps he was starting to cut back and he said: "Well, I am only working a LITTLE more than full time now..."
There really are not enough superlatives to use describing Dr. Stechschulte. My condolences to his family, I am sure he was well-loved and that you will miss him greatly, as will we all.

My deepest sympathies to the Stechschulte family. I wish you much comfort in the loss of such a dear and beloved family member.

I feel very sad and shocked to learn that Dr. Stechschulte has passed away. He is such a gentle, caring, and brilliant physician and teacher that you believe he will be there forever for his patients, students, colleagues, friends and family.

I was very fortunate to be one of Dr. Stechschulte's students. I still vividly remember that one day he explained in great detail the cause, treatment and potential outcome of a potentially fatal disease to a young patient. During that process, he not only offered comfort and hope to the terrified patient, but also instilled medical knowledge and compassion into a naïve medical student.

To multiply such a small example with Dr. Stechschulte's professional life, you get the heart and soul, and forever a legend, of KU Medical Center.

Dr. Stec as we called him in Int. Med. was a great person .I worked with him 15 yrs ago for about 5 yrs .He always smiled & said hello & he always remembered my name & asked how I was.
Most docs in a big clinic rarely do that . We also shared a laugh I will never forget. I said is that your son I saw on a comercial . he said yes thats my son , But I am better looking. We laughed .He was a very special person I will not forget him.

Dan Stechschulte was a truely great soul.An extremely kind and humble genius. He touched so many as teacher, mentor, healer, friend, neighbor, husband, father, and grandfather.
He treated each patient as if they were his only concern, with compassion, understanding and dignity. He cared about and listened to the hospital staff , providing guidance, support, and encouragment. He wore a smile on his face each and every day.
His face brightened when he spoke about the wife he loved and the family he was so proud of. A simple mention of Helen's name would bring a grin from ear to ear. He was an extraordinary man.
My thoughts and prayers are with you. His passing is a great loss.

I wish the Stechschulte's much comfort in the loss of husband, father and grandfather. He is irreplaceable in your hearts and those who had the pleasure of knowing him well. I met Dr. Stechschulte via an email I sent to ask a question about rheumatology & immunology. He was so kind and thoughtful in responding without even knowing me. Every time I saw him in the corridors of KU Hospital after that, he smiled and said hello to continually acknowledge we had made that tiny connection. This is the way of a man who clearly had a way of making people feel he cared. I'm so grateful I was blessed to experience his giving spirit!

Dear Mrs. Stechschulte and family,

I was so sorry to hear the sad news about Dr. Stechschulte. I had a great opportunity to be trained under his guidance between 1975 to 1978 at KU medical center, which was one of the best time of my life.

During that time, I have found that Dr. Stechschulte was not only a great clinician and researcher, but was also a great athlete and a great, great human being. He was always kind to me and gave me generous support. I always think of him as my own father. I am sorry that I didn't have a chance to visit him during his illness. Please send my condolences to your family.

Charlie and I remember Dr. Stechshulte as an absolutely legendary academic figure at KU, throughout our medical school years, residency training, and for many years after. He was truly someone to emulate - he was kind, compassionate, thoughtful and approachable in addition to being brilliant, a great professor, and an esteemed colleague. We will miss him, but are confident that he has left a legacy in the medical community that will endure for many years, through his
students, colleagues and patients. Our deepest condolences.

I was lucky enough to do my rheumatology fellowship under Dan Stechschulte from 1986 through1989. Hands down, he had the best combination of intelligence, warmth, common sense, integrity, and clinical acumen of anyone I had worked with before or since. He was a great man who lived a good life and had a wonderful family. He will be sorely missed.

It's a sad day when I found out that my best mentor ever, Dr. Stechschulte at KU Med, has passed away. He was like a father to me, a great physician, and a very caring person. I learned so much from him that I wish I could've spent more time with him to learn even more. It is a huge loss to our medical community. Unfortunately, we don't have too many people like him any more. May God rest his soul.

Ever since our kids attended Shawnee Mission East together, (Troy Duncan was in Ann's class) I've been impressed with the entire Stechschulte family. Only when Dan became my immunologist did I realize the extent of his many fine qualities. His remarkable medical knowledge and skills were matched by his genuine interest, warmth and kindness toward patients. I feel fortunate to have been in his care, and will miss our monthly visits at KU Med. My heart goes out to his loved ones as they mourn his loss, celebrate his life, and honor his memory.

Ann,
I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am to hear of your dad's passing. Your dad was one of the finest physicians that I have ever come into contact with during my past decade of training here at KU. Your dad was highly respected by ALL who had the pleasure of working with him. I remember in residency and fellowship often thinking I would be very happy if I could ever develop a fraction of the knowledge as your dad had in such a wide variety of subjects.
Your dad always was encouraging and had a very calm nature. I remember talking one day, with another resident, about who we thought some of the most outstanding faculty we came under the mentorship of were here at KU. Your dad's name was mentioned at the very top of that list.
I can only imagine some of the emotion and heartache you are feeling right now. I just wanted you to know how much I truly appreciated your father, and how fortunate I feel to have had the opportunity to work with him and gotten to know him personally.
