Del Stumpff always treated me like a son rather than an employee, he showed me the ropes in the construction industry and in life. I will always carry a bit him and you Mil, with me. You both have been so kind to me, thanks for sharing your time and wisdom with me. If I can only be half the man Del was, I would be happy. We lost a great man. I'm so sorry for your loss Mil, I love and respect you both.

To Karen:
Just by chance I saw in the Star that your father had passed. I remember meeting him when we were at KU. I read some of the other enteries in the guest book and found them very touching. I know this is a great loss for you and your family. My prayers are with you.

Hi Millie and family
We just heard last evening. Lenny called and left a message at the home number. I was so sadden to find our info was not correct about date of death and that we'll not be able to be there for the funeral, as it is today. Our hearts are heavy with this wonderful persons' leaving but as we all know we he is in his glory with His savior. This is one house he can proudly say he also helped to build. Leonard Sr. I am sure met him at the gates with open arms. I shall NEVER forget his smiling heart; always welcoming us into your home. Do say our farewell to that big guy and we will try to keep in touch better. With all our prayers and heart, Lenny and Sue and family

One of the great american heroes of WWII. Uncle Del was a great guy. I always remember him laughing about something. He and my dad would start telling stories and both would be having a great time. I will/have missed him by living in Colo. My family loved coming back to KC for Christmas, as we would have the Christmas gag gift exchange. There always be good/funny stuff going on. Del usually was in the middle of it. He was a great father and husband. Your in a better place, you and dad can now get together and laugh and tell the stories again. Hope to see you someday.

Past president
Del Stumpff dies
Past President Del Stumpff died Feb. 16 at a Kansas City, KS, hospital where had remained for five weeks in critical condition following a cardiac arrest at his home in Overland Park.
He was in a coma and on life support systems prior to his death.
His wife Millie spent each day with him. She appreciates the concern shown by 99th friends during his illness.
Stumpff was a staff sergeant in D/394. He joined the 99th at Camp Van Dorn and was joined by his wife at Camp Maxey.
In combat during the Battle of the Bulge S/Sgt Stumpff exhibited valor by ordering his .81mm mortar section to raise the angle of fire to 89 degrees, wiping out waves of attacking Germans. Several articles and books were written about the operation.
He served the 99th Association as sergeant-at-arms, and proudly carried Old Glory during the San Antonio convention, in spite of failing health.
He and Millie attended all conventions and most of the 99th tours to European battlefields.
The home address is 10812 W. 141st St, Overland Park, KS 66621.
A successful Kansas City real estate developer and housing contractor, he is survived by his wife Mildred, daughter Karen Rodrock, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A life-sketch will be published in the Taps column of the next issue of Checkerboard.

Del Stumpff, one of the true heros of WWII, held off the German spearhead at Losheim Gap furing the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium/Germany Dec. 16, 1944. Staff Sergeant Stumpff fired his .81mm mortars at 89degrees elevation to hold off an entire regiment of invading Germans.
One of the "best of all" men we've known, he and his faithful wife Mil have been our friends for decades. While we hate to see him go, we realize that his was a life of achievement and the world is a better place because he was here.
