Fred Cox Obituary

Fred Waldo Cox, 88, Pleasanton, KS, passed away July 19, 2003, at the Sweet Life Care Center, Shawnee, KS. Waldo was born September 20, 1914, in Mantey, KS, to Fred and Grayce Marker Cox. He lived his entire life in Linn County, KS. On January 11, 1942, Waldo was united in marriage to Jessie Edwarda Schmaltz, in Hume, MO. This union was blessed with six children. Waldo owned and operated Cox Motor Company in Pleasanton, KS, for 55 years, and Twin CC Farms near Prescott, KS. He was a generous and community-loved individual, always giving back to his community. He made many contributions to the Linn County Museum in Pleasanton, VFW Post #862, and established a college scholarship fund for Pleasanton High School seniors. He was a Dad and a Granddad who shared his love for travel and automobiles with his family. Waldo was a member of the First Methodist Church of Pleasanton, a World War II Navy Veteran, a Mason, a member of the Mirza Shrine, a past member of the Kansas Highway Patrol, a past board director of the First State Bank of Pleasanton, and an avid antique car collector. He is preceded in death by his wife, Edwarda; two sons, William Robert (in infancy) and Franklin; and a daughter, Louetta Secrest. He is survived by three daughters, Kandie Fairchild, Broken Arrow, OK, Charlotte Newell and husband Ed, Rawlins, WY, and Cindy Brinkman and husband Phil, Shawnee, KS; nephew Kelley Gilstrap, Lacey, WA; nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Cox willed his remains to the University of Kansas Medical Center. Memorial services will be Saturday, August 2, at 2 p.m. at the First Methodist Church, Pleasanton, KS, under direction of the Sheldon-Booth Funeral Home, Rich Hill, MO. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the First Methodist Church of Pleasanton or the Waldo and Edwarda Cox Scholarship Fund, PO Box 3450, Shawnee Mission, KS, 66203. After the services, his family will receive friends in the church foyer.

Franklin and I will always remember the wild game dinner that Waldo and Edwarda had invited all the Cox cousins to attend - many years ago. He will be missed.
