HAROLD SWANSON HOOK At age 86, Harold Swanson Hook passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2018 in Houston, TX. A native of Missouri, Harold grew up on a dairy farm in the Kansas City area, and he began his education in a one-room school in Lee's Summit, MO. While an undergraduate, Harold served as President of the University Student Union. As a graduate student, he also served on the faculty of the University's School of Business. Harold held a four-year Naval ROTC scholarship, and upon receiving his commission served three years active duty on a minesweeper in the U.S. Atlantic Fleet as an executive officer and navigator. After completing active military service, Harold joined National Fidelity Life in Kansas City, starting his 40-year career in life insurance and financial services. In 1963, at age 31, he was elected President and CEO of the Company, the youngest life insurance president in the nation. In the Summer of 1964, before beginning my freshman year at MU, I was hired by National Fidelity Life in KC for a 3 month job, helping out in the accounting department. I would have had no reason to hob-nob with really important people like Mr. Hook. That is, until one night when we were all working overtime to run the agents' statements and checks to get in the mail the next day. Something had gone wrong, so all were staying late into the evening. Mr. Hook was there, too, so great was our mission and urgency. For whatever reason, since I'd never done anything like it before, I was given the task of running the statements/checks through a bursting machine. This involved setting the margins to tear everything in the right places. At some point, it was determined that I'd set margins incorrectly; the result was a mess, not to mention a huge waste of everyone's time to that point. I set out to find Mr. Hook, to tell him what I'd done and to apologize. I'd never been so scared before and I wonder if I've ever been as scared since. His response was to assure me that the fault wasn't mine, but belonged to whoever it was had given a 17-year-old kid such a big responsibility. Wow! Talk about the epitome of grace! I offer these words of gratitude for his life knowing they are joined by those of many others. He really was one of the most unforgettable great people I've known.

In the summer of 1964, before beginning my freshman year at MU, I was hired as an accounting clerk at NFL. I busied myself on the 5th floor, as I recall, with no need to interface with Mr. Hook or other really important people. Until one night that seared itself in my memory and provided me with a story to tell many times: We were working late, having missed a deadline to mail agents' statements and checks. The statements were printed from the probably nearly brand new IBM computer that occupied a large, air-conditioned room. Someone gave me the job of setting up the margins for what I'll call the bursting machine through which all the statements were run. I set the margins wrong. The result was a disaster and a huge waste of the many hours already spent on the task. Mr. Hook had stayed around, so great apparently was our mission and urgency. I searched him out to tell him what had happened, what I'd done. I'd never been so scared, and probably have never been as scared since as I was to tell him the setback I'd dealt his company. His response was to assure me that the fault wasn't mine but belonged to whoever it was who had given this 17 year-old kid such a big job. Wow! Is it any wonder I've never forgotten him. Today, I happened upon his obituary in the Star. I offer you these thoughts knowing they are but one more testament to your loved one's wonderful life.
