JEAN HAWKINS Obituary

Jean Hawkins, Liberty, Missouri, passed away in the arms of her family at her home on Monday evening, April 17, 2017, the result of an almost year-long struggle with colon cancer. She is survived by her husband, Stephen Pruitt Hawkins of the home; her sons: Stephen Christopher Hawkins, Laurel, Maryland; Troy BartholomewHawkins (wife Lauren and children Benjamin Wayne, Emma Jean and Clara Elizabeth Hawkins), Pendleton, IN; Gabriel Augustine Hawkins (wife Seevan), Lenexa, KS; and Nicholas Sebastian Hawkins (wife Dawn and son Calvin Peter Parham Hawkins), Kansas City, MO.

Dr. Hawkins was born in Kansas City, Missouri on September 24, 1947, to Ruth Brown and Roy Charles Garner, both of whom predeceased her. Her sister, Julia Ann Tolin, also survives, Topeka, KS.  Jean attended and graduated from public schools in El Dorado Springs, MO, obtained bachelors and masters degrees from Central Missouri State University in 1968 and 1970, and was awarded the Doctor of Business Administration degree from Anderson University, Anderson, IN, in 2011.
Jean taught for brief periods at several colleges, but defined her teaching career at William Jewell College in Liberty, where she taught from 1976 through her retirement in 2015. Her four sons were born and graduated from Jewell during her tenure there. She valued higher education, and encouraged all her sons and her husband to pursue post-graduate education; typically unselfish, she set aside obtaining her own doctoral degree until late in her career.
Jean was a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant, and was a member of the AICPA, Missouri Society of CPAs, First Presbyterian Church of Liberty (and formerly Second Baptist Church of Liberty).
A memorial reception will be scheduled later in May, when all Mrs. Hawkins' children and grandchildren can be present in Liberty.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Dr. Jean Hawkins Memorial Accounting Award for Women at William Jewell College, 500 College Hill, Box 1032, Liberty, Missouri 64068 or follow the link, William Jewell Tribute Gifts.  Condolences may be shared with the family at www.CremationCenterKC.com

I am so sad to hear of Jean's passing. She was the best accounting teacher ever, but most of all she was a wonderful counselor, advisor, and christian friend. She was very patient to me at a time when I was going back to school for the first time in years. There was a lot of change going on in my life and she helped me keep things in perspective. I thank God for her and look forward to seeing her in Heaven some day. My prayers are with her dear family.

Steve and family,

Our hearts ache for all of you at Jean's passing. We count it a privilege to call Jean our colleague and friend during her time in the Doctor of Business Administration Program at Anderson University and in all the years since she completed her doctoral degree. Her kindness to all of us and her persistence in her work are something we'll always remember. She was the face of God to us in those times. Our prayers are with you today and in the days ahead. May the peace of Christ be yours.

Steve, I'm so sorry for your loss. I was in Jean's Cost Accounting class as a Junior (many years ago). While accounting never came easy to me, Jean had a way of explaining things that made it easier for my economic brain to understand! She was notorious for investing in the lives of her students, and I'm grateful to have known her while on Jewell's campus! Praying for you and your family.

Hello, Steve,

We were so fond of Jean. Don found her very interesting to talk with.

We did not know of her illness. Apparently, she worked with students nearly to the end. We will miss her and grieve with you.

Fondly,

Neita

I would have never made it through my 4 years at William Jewell if not for the kindness, caring, sympathetic ear, guidance, love, support, encouragement and faith that this woman put into me. She was my rock, my adviser, my friend and one of the loveliest persons I have ever known. My genuine love and sympathy go out to Jean's family, friends and former students. Those of you who had her in class or were lucky enough to have her as your adviser know exactly what she meant to so many of us. She was a calm and steady light in this world and I know that we will all be a little less without her in it.

Steve and Family,

I am so very thankful to have been able to share a small part of the earthly journey with this remarkable woman. Knowing she has gone on to Christ's waiting arms, it's like a light has gone out in our community--much more so for you, I know.
I am with you all in prayer, and look forward to the day we will all be together once again.
in the Master's hand,
