John Coughlin Obituary

John Patrick Coughlin John Coughlin, 33 died January 18, 2019 at his home. John was born December 1, 1985 in Kansas City, Missouri and raised Catholic by his parents, Sergeant Michael Coughlin and Stacy Coughlin BSN RN., and his older sister Angela Laune. He was a proud graduate of Center High School. He is survived by his father Michael, his sister Angela (Ryan) Laune; his grandmother Nancy Holmes; aunt Margaret (John) Cochran and uncle Tom Edmondson. John was preceded in death by his mother Stacy; grandfather Gary Holmes and grandparents Charles and Rosemary Coughlin. He leaves many cousins, nieces, and nephews that he adored. John was the most accomplished ice-skating athlete ever produced in Kansas City. He started skating at age four. His dedicated training which included the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, won him two US Pairs National Championship titles in 2011 and 2012. He was a force to be reckoned with on the international skating circuit for about ten years performing for Team USA in international competitions in Russia, France, Germany, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and Japan. Upon retiring from competition, he assumed a leadership role in international skating, advocating for skaters around the world who could not stand up for themselves. He served on committees for the International Skating Union and US Figure Skating. John had a gentle soul and his strengths shined through his ability to keep his cool under extreme pressure. John died at his home in Kansas City at 33 years of age. We lost a gentle soul, a gracious man, and a child of God. A visitation service will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church, 425 W. 85th Street, Kansas City Missouri 64114 on Monday January 28, 2019. A world without John is a colder and darker place. I will always remember John's smile and unique ability to bring everyone and anyone together. John had the heart and soul of a champion. John was a champion not only in his own right as a skater, but a champion of his friends, peers, students and family. John was so loving and so beloved by so many. Although his life was tragically shortened, it was certainly a life well lived and one with many accomplishments and lots of love, smiles, and laughter. I will always know and remember John as a kind and beautiful soul. Sending much love to John's sister Angela and father Michael.

Dear Michael and Angela: May God bless your son and brother, John , and all your grieving family, as well as all his numerous friends in and outside of the figure skating community who mourn his loss. On a personal level, beyond just his skating talent, John obviously was many wonderful things to many people ,judging by the numerous online condolences and comments to the various news articles which have appeared after his death. Most notable ,perhaps, are the beautiful, heartfelt tributes from so many parents of skaters John coached , who have expressed their gratitude for the supportive and caring way he treated their children. May his gentle and kind soul rest in perpetual peace.

I was John's third grade teacher at Indian Creek Elementary in Center School District. I remember him as a bright, caring, and talented student. On one of his skating tours, he emailed me just to say hi and let me know he still remembered me. I am sad to hear of his passing. He made me proud to have once been a part of his life.
