I saw Dr. Asher as a teen for my 'severe' scoliosis. I remember that he was pleasant and kind, but it is hard to remember much because I was so scared being there every year or so, for monitoring of my condition. Looking back, I praise God for having him as my doctor because even though I was a candidate for surgery in some ways, he recommended I keep a healthy weight and exercise, keep my core strong, and said we could watch and wait rather than do surgery. This advice also led me to become a dietitian and focus more on a healthy lifestyle to prevent further problems. Looking back his one sentence literally led me to a lifetime of learning and research in wellness. Now at age 37, I have had two kids and my curve is still stable and my pain is at it lowest ever. I can do anything! I wish I could tell him thank you for his wisdom and helping guide me in good health despite my scoliosis. May God bless him for his humility and love for his patients.

Dr. Asher meant the world to me. He was always so kind. He helped me through 5 surgeries. The last three were completed during my stay at KU from October 31 thru December 1st. I looked forward to seeing him every day when he made his rounds. For years he would call me around Christmas each year to check on me. I remember the last time I seen him was many years after my last surgery. He called and asked if I would do him a favor. I said absolutely anything for you. He wanted me to come to KU to do xrays. He wanted to see how I was doing years after surgery. He said he was checking for scar tissue. He was planning do a research project. My husband and I met him at KU. He even paid me milage for coming in. It was my pleasure just to see him again. We enjoyed our visit with him. What a wonderful man. I am having issues the past few years with numbness and pain down left leg. We have been unable to find the issue. I would love to talk to him about it. I am positive he would know what the problem is. Xrays show my back is solid and all his work looks great! I think of him often and miss him so much. He was absolutely amazing! Delores Heins

Dr. Asher had such a profound affect on me. I remember seeing him for the first time at the age of 15 and realizing he resembled my Great-grandfather I never knew. That is when I knew God and my Great-grandfather were watching over me through him. My visits and even surgery never meant being sad or upset because mom and I would laugh before, during and after a visit with Dr. Asher. I won't forget the hand held recorder for his dictations and the smile he would give after each one, like "you got this girl, we are a team!" I would leave him a smiley face drawing.
My mom was able to have the honor of sitting next to him when he received "Kansan of the Year" because he always remembered us laughing so so much down the hall, I think we brought him a smile as much as he brought me a smile.
I even kept in touch years later to let him know my youngest daughter too has "S" scoliosis and he told me which doctor I should see in NC. He wanted me to call him after our appts. to keep him updated.
Now 33 years later, my L5 and disks with age needed additional surgery - nothing from what he did, just me being almost 50 years old. I decided to call today and let him know how both my daughter and I were doing and that is when I found out about his passing. I felt like I just lost a Family member!
Dr. Asher, I love you so much for all you did for me as a kid and all the countless lives you touched throughout your career! You truly are an amazing person and I will NEVER forget you!

Huge regret that I did not share with him the meaning he had in my life. As a young girl with scoliosis he treated me by bracing me with Milwaukee brace. Later when I want on to a career in nursing (KU Med Nsg 85)it was only natural that I chose to work on the Orthopedic floor at the University of Kansas- where this man was on staff. I don't feel like I knew him well yet his memory has impacted me tremendously. So intelligent and hard Working. God Bless him - I,for one, benefited from his dedication. Francie Bailey Wendlandt

I had the privilege and honour to meet , work and travel with Marc for many years. Marc was by far the most dedicated , passionate person I ever came across . His influence in optimizing treatment of spinal disorders has been crucial . His knowledge and expertise was second to none yet his self criticism always there. He taught me and many others to challenge existing treatments and always strive for optimization . He was extremely humble although one of the godfathers of optimize treatment of spinal deformities . He was a great example for me and many others , a person one could rely on , ethical and honest , gifted with enormous empathy for others . May he rest in peace and 2ish Miss Eli and family , friends all the strength needed in this challenging period . Jan Gademann
