Thomas Lowrie Lyon, Jr., 69, of Leawood, KS passed away February 24, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with leukemia. He was a 1961 graduate of Rockhurst High School, a 1965 graduate of Rockhurst College, and he received his PhD from the University of Missouri - Columbia. Tom joined the Rockhurst University faculty in 1975 as the founder and first director of the MBA program. He later co- founded the Executive Fellows MBA program. Tom subsequently served as chair, division chair and interim dean of the Helzberg School of Management, but his first love was that of being a professor and teacher. Tom also served as a consultant to various businesses, and he enjoyed the teamwork of co-presenting seminars on various business topics locally and throughout the United States. Among other recognitions throughout his teaching career, on February 13thof this year, Tom was honored by Rockhurst University as the first recipient of the Fr. Nick Rashford, S.J., Award for Leadership and Ethics. Tom was a devoted Catholic and a member of Cure of Ars Catholic Church. He loved blues music, nature, handball and basketball, but far and away the best, he loved his family. Tom is survived by his wife, Teresa; his daughter, Laura Melo and her husband, Robert, and their son, John; his son, Thomas Lowrie Lyon III and his wife, Cherise, and their daughters, Lexi and Lizzie. Tom also leaves many beloved cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and long-time friends and colleagues that were very dear to him. Visitation will be from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, Thursday, February 27, at Muehlebach Funeral Home, 6800 Troost Ave., Kansas City, MO. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am, Friday, February 28, at Cure of Ars Catholic Church, 9401 Mission Road, Leawood, KS. Tom you are an amazing cousin. Your guidance has led me to a new phase of my life. I will always be grateful to you and to Teresa for being pillars for me after Susie passed. Meeting you at Knuckleheads to hear you play your harps so magnificently was a real true treat for me. I will always be your groupie dear Cuz!

As a work colleague of Tom (the son), the legacy, values and character of Tom (the Dad) are very clear. Tom (the son) is an amazing man that has the interest of others before his own. His outlook on life is always positive, with a sincerity that could only have been taught by a Father that instilled this life perspective. What a wonderful testimony to Tom (the Dad) in having a legacy through his son that will continue. I pray that God will provide his peace to the Lyon family during this difficult time.

I was Tom's student, colleague and friend for nearly 40 years. He was also a mentor for me. He is one of the unsung heroes in Kansas City and was largely responsible for the high national ranking of Rockhurst's MBA program. He will be sorely missed.

Aunt Teresa, Laura and Tom, I am so sorry for your loss. I only hope that there is some comfort for you knowing his suffering is over and he is with the Lord for eternity. I know how much he loved fishing and even though all Teal and I ever caught were logs and trees, Uncle Tom kept waking us up every time to go with him. Of the 3 hours we were gone each time, he probably only actually got to fish for about 20 minutes because of us.

February 26, 2014

Theresa and family, I was so sorry to hear about Tom's death. Please know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Sue Maguire McDonald
