Mylo Metz Obituary

Mylo Eugene Metz, age 86, died Saturday November 11,2023, at Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls, SD. Mylo was born in Adrian, MN on June 22, 1937, to Louis and Vivian Owens Metz. He grew up on the family farm and attended St. Adrian Catholic School. He met his wife, Elsie in Sioux Falls and they were married on February 28, 1969. Mylo, together with Elsie, loved Sioux Falls even now with all its changes, progress, and traffic as they moved through life's changes. Working in the grocery store business first in Adrian and then Sioux Falls allowed Mylo to pursue one of his favorite things, meeting, getting to know people, and serving them. Mylo's next and last profession was working at Sioux Vocational Services, Inc. assisting people less fortunate in life who were able to get out into the working world and enjoy life a little bit more. He loved working with the people. A favorite hobby of Mylo's was gardening, growing beautiful flowers, and making artificial flower bouquets for family, friends, weddings, etc. Many of them have been saved and continue to be enjoyed. Mylo, being a skilled craftsman who paid attention to detail, loved to assemble displays which reminded him of his childhood on the farm. The picture on his program is of a cross section of the barn on the home farm. The picture could not show the inside of the barn which also shows his craftsmanship. Mylo loved his Irish heritage. Mylo and Elsie enjoyed traveling. They travelled to Ireland for an enjoyable time of discovery, to the Holy Land and numerous bus and car trips. Mylo is survived by his wife Elsie (Risty), sisters; Mary Carol Lursen, Jo Willemstein, Donna Bartholomaus (Robert), Patricia Pass (Hubert), Kay Dammer (Larry), Gayle Buss, brothers; Michael Metz (Beverly), Patrick Metz (Coletta), brother-in-law Vernon Risty, and many nieces and nephews. Mylo is preceded in death by his parents Louis and Vivian Metz, sister Delores Hokeness Ruser, brothers-in-law; Donald Lursen, Gary Hokenuss,Duane Ruser and Dale Buss, mother-in-law Louise, father-in-law Emil, step mother-in-law Edna, and sister-in-law Mireya Risty. Funeral Mass will be at Christ the King Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. with family present one hour before mass for visitation. Mylo's family invites you to join them for lunch and fellowship after the mass before burial.

Was so sorry to see Mylo had passed. My mom, sister, brother-in-law as well as myself and many friends worked with Mylo back during the Hanks Grocery Store days. He was also very professional and a hard worker, but it was obvious to he had a big heart. He taught us all a lot about working hard and having customer service. Fond memories.

I want to thank Mylo and Elsie for being such wonderful friends to my Mother, Agnes Fillaus. They both spent time with her in her later years and Mylo gave her rides to church and other places. She enjoyed their company so much and it was comforting for my brother and I to know she had such a helpful, gentle man to ensure her safety walking into church, etc. I believe the three of them also shared meals, baked goods and other things together. I got to sit with Mylo and Elsie at the church dinners a couple times - such lovely people. My love and prayers are with Elsie as she says goodbye to such a good-hearted man. I am in California visiting my son so I cannot attend Mylo’s service but I will be thinking of you all.

Tribute to A Godfather

Never really knew how or why Mylo was chosen as my Godfather. The beauty was that when Maddie and Freddie asked on my infant behalf, Mylo said "Yes, he would do it." With Rosemary Bureau (Forette) as my Godmother, they stood for this baby. Maybe as Kay said, Mylo was a "perfectionist!". Maybe that's what my parents saw and that Mylo would watch over me over time. He always was supportive, and years ago I thanked him for this quality. His smile and laugh are unique. He enjoyed family, from Adrian to New Jersey.

As a Physician-ER Doc, I learned close up that we hope and pray for different needs at different times. A cure, a healing, less pain, then peace. Again, Mylo is and has been exactly what my parents asked for... a guiding, smiling, enjoyable moment in God's universe with an Irish humor to lighten and light my way...and yours. God bless my Godfather, Mylo. He already is at peace.

We share in your sadness upon losing Mylo. I remember him as such a smiley and happy soul.
Unfortunately, living so far away in Sauk Rapids , and Dick having suffered a stroke sometime back
Makes it difficult to attend the service. Please know we send our most sincere condolences. He will meet his parents with open arms and his famous smile!!
RIP Mylo
