Benjamin Moore Obituary

FRANKFORT - Benjamin Gardner Moore, the son of Rogers Thomas Moore of Hazard, Kentucky and Jane Lanier Williams of Frankfort, Kentucky, was born on August 16, 1925, in Frankfort, Kentucky and passed away on February 26, 2015. He attended Murray Street School, Second Street School and Graduated from Frankfort High School in 1943. He obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky, where he lettered in tennis. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II, and served with the 87thDivision in the Battle of the Bulge, and the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe campaigns. He married Celeste Curlin and they have five children, Celeste Moore, Victoria Moore (Charles), Benjamin Moore, Jr., (Linda), Robert Moore (Susan) and William Moore (Sarah). He has seven grandchildren, Melanie Moore, George Pigman, Margaret Pigman, Brian Moore, Katie Moore, Maddie Moore and Caroline Moore. He worked as a salesman for Kraft Foods and Tennessee Pride Sausage until he returned to Frankfort in 1974. He built and ran the Sycamore Tennis Club and taught tennis to countless students. He also served as the coach of the Frankfort High Men's Tennis Team for 11 years. He held the top ranking in his age group in tennis in Kentucky and the South, and was ranked as high as 13th nationally. He was admitted to the Kentucky Tennis Hall of Fame in 2000. The Ben Moore Tennis Courts in the Panther Athletic Center on Old Lawrenceburg Road are named after him. More importantly, he was willing to play tennis with, or teach tennis to, anyone that he met along the way. Tennis was his dream sport. Ben was also a marvelous singer, singing with the Capitol City Chorale, the Statesmen Barbershop Chorus, the First Christian Church Choir, the South Frankfort Presbyterian Church Choir, and the Thoroughbred Barbershop Chorus. Services were held at Rogers Funeral Home on Saturday, February 28, 2015. Online condolences may be made at rogersfrankfort.com
