C. Hockensmith Obituary

HOCKENSMITH C. Hoge, Jr, 87, (a resident of Wesley VIllage in Wilmore, KY), went home to his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Born July 10, 1925 and raised in Irvine, KY, Hoge proudly served in the U.S. Navy in WWII as a medical corpsman. After the war he majored in Law at the University of KY. He met Nora Lee Johnson there and they married in 1948. In 1950 he relinquished his goal of a career in politics and answered God's call to preach the gospel. He started his pastoral ministry among his beloved Eastern Kentuckians in Perry County and Paintsville, KY. His ministry took him to Ohio where he pioneered in the establishment of Southern Baptist work as a denominational leader, evangelist, and pastor of three churches. He was on the SBC executive committee and helped draft the (1963) "Baptist Faith and Message." In 1973 he returned to Lexington, KY, to pastor Broadway Baptist Church until his retirement in 1991. He was well-known throughout the Bluegrass for his radio broadcast, "Joy In the Morning," which aired on WJMM for over 15 years. After "retirement" in 1991, his home base was in Irvine while he served multiple churches in Eastern KY as an interim pastor and preacher. During the 70s, at the invitation of the SBC mission board, he conducted evangelistic crusades on 4 continents. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Hoge will be greatly missed by Nora Lee, his loving wife of 64 years, and his children: Janette (Homer) Reeves of Greenville, SC; Charles P. Hockensmith, Sr., of Monroe Twp., NJ; and Sarah (Glenn) Perry of Lexington, KY; 5 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. Arrangements are with Kerr Brothers on Harrodsburg Rd. Visitation on Friday, April 12, 4-8pm. Visitation also on Saturday from 12:30-2:30pm, with a celebration of his life at Broadway Baptist Church, 2500 Harrodsburg Rd. at 2:30pm. Memorial contributions are suggested to International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention or Hospice of the Bluegrass.

Hoge was a fine christian man, I met Hoge when he ran for office in the early 90s and he later became chairman of the republican party of Estill County, and we were proud to have him. Thanks for all your service to our great country, you will be missed.

So sorry for your loss...Rev. Hockensmith and my father, Dr. A.D. Slone were great friends when he was pastor at the First Baptist Church in Paintsville. I was only 7 at the time but I remember him well also, because he was frequently at our house. He performed several marriages at our home and I am attaching a photo of one. My father and mother are on the right, the names of the couple escape me.

I am so sorry for your loss but thankful for the celebration they are having in Heaven. He has left a great legacy and a wonderful family many of whom are following his leadership. I am glad that we are part of the family in a very minute way. I am sending my deepest sympathy. Keep the good work going. Love Nedra & Browne

Dad, what a gift to have you as my father! You taught me how to fish, how to tie my shoes, how to roller skate... But more importantly you taught me of eternal things--things that are unseen but very real--like faithfulness, giving to those who ask, loving those who may not be lovely, and you taught me how to forgive! You put within my mind and heart a love for people-from all nations and whatever language. You gave a love for music all kinds but especially for the hymns and their eternal truth! I can go...I'll come back later!!

Rev Hoge was a gentle giant. He had a wonderful laugh that I remember 46 years later. He was always kind and loving and a great witness everywhere he went. He and Nora Lee were dear friends of my Mom and Dad. He married my husband and I almost 45 years ago. My sympathies to the family.

Thank you Mr. Hockensmith for allowing me to be your daughters friend. And, thank you for letting me tag along with your family giving me many warm memories of West Side Baptist Church...such warm people, and several after church dinners with some of them. Great people, great memories. Your faith and your strength poured out to the New family. I remember that time so clearly. Thank you for being you.

God bless you all... The angels of heaven are rejoicing that another faithful servant is HOME... He had finised the race and stands in the presence of Jesus! Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints because they are in HIS PRESENCE FOREVER!!! God bless you in the waiting time for being reunited with Him.

When I was about 2 years old, my parents, Pete and Clara DeWilde, and 4 other couples called Bro. and Mrs. Hockensmith to pastor Tri-Village Baptist Church in Grandview Heights, Columbus, Ohio. The parsonage was my playground and the Hockensmith kids my playmates. Charlie and I went thru elementary school together, Bro. Hockensmith baptised us both at an old downtown church since we didn't have a baptistry. Tri-Village grew into Lane Ave. Baptist after the Hockensmith's left, and is once again building and moving. His leadership and vision of Baptists in Ohio continues. He was always special to our family through the years. Our deepest sympathy to the family, but know he is singing with my dad in the heavenly choir!! Much love, B.Kaye DeWilde Beckner and Clara R. DeWilde, Bowling Green, KY and

I can't think our Father God enough for letting me be a part of this great man of God's life. I still remember the first day we met at BBC in 1977. It was the day that would change our lives. We became members and continued under his leadership until he retired. I was broken hearted when he left, but all the things I learned from him still burn in my heart today. He was the most loving and compassionate man I have ever known. He never met a stranger. His door was always open and his heart was always ready to listen. He had a big heart for missions, and I had the priviledge of going with him and Nora Lee on one of them to Venezeula. Wow! It was so exciting. Well, ther are so many other things I could say, but it would take a book. In closing I want to say, Bro. Hoge loved the Lord with all his heart and it was evident. He served Him and Him alone and although he retired from BBC, he never retired from preaching the gospel. He loved doing that more than anything. He didn't have to be in a pulpit, he taught it with his life. I loved this man and I will miss him so much. I didn't get to see him a lot but it was always comforting to know he was there. It hurts so much to know he has gone. BUT, that is my flesh talking, for I know he is with the God of this universe, the one he loved and served all his life and one day we who are in Christ will see him again and have a great reunion celebrating around God's throne. What a day that will be, Praise the Lord. Nora Lee and family may God' peace fill your hearts during this time and give you strength to keep fighting the fight until He comes to take us home too. I love you all very much.

Our loss is truly heavens gain! My prayers and thoughts go out to Pastor Hockensmith's family.
I was saved as an early teen through the Spireno Crusade that was organized by Bro. Hoge through West Side Baptist Church, in Hamilton Ohio in the early 70's.
I then went on to be baptized and became a member of West Side Baptist Church.
I and my dear friend were some of the teens that attended church without parents or family. Though we were often ornery, I never remember a time that he was upset or unkind to us in any way.
The knowledge I gained under his ministry has never left me. I will never forget his sermon in 1972 at Easter. He preached about the shed blood of Christ. The sacrifice Jesus made for me had never been more vivid. It still reflect on it each Easter morning, 40 years later!
Wish I could be there today to celebrate his life since his service to the Lord certainly changed mine.

I always remember one Sunday evening when Brother Hoge asked Steve Ryker "what was this morning's sermon about?" and Steve said "about 20 minutes too long". That was about the only time I ever saw Hoge not be able to find words to say anything.

Grandpa...I' m told this is a happy occasion & a celebration.but you know us Catholics & Liberals are a tough bunch..though my heart is breaking & tears have been flowing since Wednesday..I will do my best to relay the funny & sweet.. memories..we had a very special relationship that I honestly don't think anyone knew about..The e- mails in the wee small hours when we both couldn't sleep ..the hours of phone calls when I would just call to say Hi...I never tired of hearing how you met Granny...your war stories & how you just walked in on the President of the United States..we would have our friendly political banter...but we never tried to influence each other..I respect that you never tried to convert me..but every conversation would end .the same.." you would be perfect, if only you were a Republican and a So Baptist"..then we would giggle..because we both knew it would never happen..I started caling you the cookie monster,Boy did you love those cookies from New York..I knew your favorites & hand picked each a every one..You were so proud of Charlie & I make this promise to you..I will do everything in my power to insure he is licensed..You were a man amongst men..and I know Our Lord personally escorted you to Heaven..You touched so many lives..& all are better for knowing you I love you and will miss you soo very much..Welome Home, Rev Hockensmith

It's 1971 and I'm sitting in a Sunday morning service at West Side Baptist Church, Hamilton, OH. Pastor Hockensmith is delivering yet again another of his (sincere from the heart) sermons. I was saved at age 14 in 1971, along with a close friend, and we both began attending West Side Baptist. I remember Pastor Hockensmith and Nora Lee, as being so warm toward the teens. I remember his smile and his unwavering boldness in faith. I will NEVER forget the meaningful time spent attending West Side Baptist, not only because of the fellow Christians I met there, but especially because of Pastor and Mrs. Hockensmith. Now his smile brighter than ever.
