Joyce Ramey

1941 - 2015

RAMEY Joyce Hayes, 74, passed away gracefully in her sleep on Sunday morning after a wonderful weekend spent touring central Kentucky attractions with out-of-town and local friends. Joyce began life's adventure on July 1st, 1941 as the farming daughter of coal mine and trucking operator Hargis Hayes and country store keeper Maxie Salisbury Hayes in the small Floyd County community of Hunter, Kentucky. After graduation from Martin High School she held increasingly responsible positions at McDowell Regional Hospital, American Standard Corporation and as assistant to the president at Prestonsburg Community College. She later became a licensed insurance agent at Commonwealth Insurance and ultimately co-owned the Ramey Insurance Agency of Prestonsburg Kentucky with her late husband Roy Ramey. She semi-retired in 1997 to enjoy Fort Lauderdale beaches and travel. Until her death she remained an active insurance agent affiliated with the Elite Agency holding licenses in both Florida and Kentucky. Joyce was an avid ballroom dancer active in Derby City Bop, Lexington Cotillion Club, and as a founding member of LexDance. She was conservative while being unwaveringly philanthropic, supporting many charitable concerns and families in Kentucky and Florida both financially and by volunteering her time. She is survived by her only son, David Lafferty, his and her friend Steve Constan and countless other friends in Lexington and in Southern Florida, her sister Judy Horsley (Darrell) in Nicholasville, Kentucky, her sister Josephine "Tootsie" Akers of Martin, Kentucky and a brother Jim (Tina) Hayes of Printer, Kentucky along with many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 5-8pm at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home-Main St. and on Friday from 11am until 1pm at Immanuel Baptist Church's Chapel followed immediately by funeral services in the same location. Burial and a brief graveside service will be held on Saturday at 11am at Davidson Memorial Gardens in Ivel, Kentucky.
