Philas Smith Obituary

SMITH Philas Jr. reunited in heaven with his beautiful and loving wife Mary Jane Maggio-Smith on June 1, 2016. Born in Anco, KY, October 6, 1925, Philas is the son of Philas Smith Sr. and Icie Adams Smith, also of Anco. Lexingtonians may remember Philas as the Controller for Appalachian Regional Healthcare. Philas loved golfing, reading, gardening and was famous at least in his house, for cooking and original recipes, such as "Dad's Famous Dip." At the age of 18, Philas joined the United States Navy and was stationed in Okinawa during World War II. After the war, he pursued his CPA and got his Masters in Accounting at Benjamin Franklin University in Washington DC. While in DC, he met his wife, Mary Jane Maggio-Smith and together they raised five children. Philas had a great sense of humor and a gift for making people laugh. He loved singing old songs, such as Hoagy Carmichael's Huggin' and Chalkin'. He was a great joke teller and when you would call him on the phone to ask him what he was doing, he'd say, "flying a kite, want to hang on to the tail?" Philas was the kind of man that would do anything for anyone. Philas is survived by his children, Candice Smith, Randall Smith, Joel Smith, Mia Krishnawami and Marisa Maggio-Harelson; nine grandchildren, Alissa, Amy, Kyle, Zachary, Emma, Sophia, Nathan, Haley Rose and Grayson; four great grandsons, Kendrick, Jayden, Desmond and Marcus; daughters-in-law, Sandra Smith and Vicky Smith; and sons-in-law, Don Krishnaswami and Scott Harelson. Philas will be deeply missed yet we are profoundly moved that he will be rejoining his beloved Mary Jane. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be 3pm Sat, July 16, 2016 at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 3421 Harrodsburg Rd., Lexington, KY 40513. A reception will follow starting at 5pm at Giuseppe's Italian Restaurant, 4456 Nicholasville Rd., Lexington, KY 40515. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Thomson-Hood Veteran's Center, 100 Veteran's Dr., Wilmore, KY 40390 and/or Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Way, Lexington, KY 40504.

Sorry for our loss of a wonderful man. He was a kind, considerate and intelligent gentleman. Good to every one who needed a hand. It was a pleasure to have worked with and for him for 30 years.

Philas is missed by all of us "old" ones still with ARH. We have many fond memories of him and grateful memories of teachings; many have benefited me all during my career. He was a special person and Mary was sweet and thoughtful. They made a lovely couple. Still missed ole friend. Anne

My good fortune was to have met Philas Smith in 1980 and to have worked for him and with him for over a decade. He was a wonderful human being and the world is poorer with his passing. May he rest in peace.

My thoughts are with Candice, Mia, Marisa, Randall, and Joel. My memories of your kind parents have stayed strong for all these years. They were always so full of the life around them, so eager to enjoy what they found and to engage and support the folks they met. I was lucky to know them. I knew it then. I know it now. Much love. I am so sorry to hear of your loss.

I met Philas when I began working for ARH in 1967. He was a wonderful person, good mentor, and he did have a great sense of humor; beside all of that he was very intelligent and I learned a lot from him over the years. My sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.

So sorry to read of Philas' passing. I worked with him at Appalachian Regional Hospitals in the middle and late 60's. He was a nice, friendly man and it was a pleasure to know him. May God bless the family with comfort and peace.

Dear Jody, Mia, Randy, Marissa, Candy, I am so sorry to hear about your Dad. Knowing he is now in a better place, he was and will always be a special friend I will miss and think of often. I have great memories of him, many in the kitchen of course, sharing stories over a cold one, some cheese and big pot of something simmering on the stove !

You all are in my thoughts and prayers !
