Virginia Kingsolver Obituary

KINGSOLVER Virginia Henry (Ginny), 83, of Carlisle died peacefully in her home on July 1, 2013, after a long illness. She was born November 20, 1929 in Lexington, Kentucky, to A.R. and Nellie Henry, and graduated from Lafayette High School and the University of Kentucky. She had recently celebrated her 63rd wedding anniversary with her husband, Dr. Wendell R. Kingsolver, her sweetheart of 70 years. She worked with him to start his family medical practice in Carlisle, where they raised their family. Ginny and Wendell together loved the natural world, and loved to travel together to see new habitats as well as preserving habitat in Kentucky. Ginny was a lifelong birdwatcher, inspiring many young birders, and served as president of the Kentucky Ornithological Society; she was also a board member of Kentucky chapters of The Nature Conservancy and the Sierra Club. She was a lifelong Girl Scout, and served as president of the Wilderness Road Girl Scout Council. Ginny and Wendell were among the founding members of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Carlisle, and she served as the choir director and the first woman elder in the church. Ginny supported volunteer efforts in and beyond her community. She was Director of Volunteer Services at the Nicholas County Hospital for 20 years, and served for over a decade as president of the Nicholas County Development Corporation at Lake Carnico. She loved flowers, and seasonal visits to Sanibel Island. Ginny said her most fulfilling work was her family life, and she delighted in her extended family and friendships. She was preceded in death by her dear sister Lenora Isenhour, and is survived by her brother John Henry. Ginny's family, remembering her with love, includes her husband Wendell, her son Rob (Paula) Kingsolver, daughters Barbara (Steven Hopp) Kingsolver, Ann (Mark Whitaker) Kingsolver, and grandchildren Ashley Campbell, Drew (Breanna) Kingsolver, Camille (Reid Snow) Kingsolver, Lily Kingsolver, and David Whitaker. There will be a visitation at Milward-Southland in Lexington on Wed, July 3, 2013, 5-7pm. There will be another visitation 11am-12pm before the funeral at 12:30pm in the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Carlisle on Fri, July 5, 2013. Private Interment will be in the Lexington Cemetery. Barbara...so sorry to hear of your loss. I know what you are feeling, I have now lost both of my parents. I want to say she was one of my very favorite people when I was a child. I loved her leading in our Girl Scout troop era. She will always be remembered to me, through that, cause the Girl Scout days are some of my best memories. Praying you will find comfort as you go on this journey.

My family met Ginny and Wendell several yrs ago camping in MN. They shared their campfire, stories & warm hearts. My then sm daughters loved them & they reminded me of my folks whom I'd recently lost. My husband &I shared their love of wildlife &wild places . We talked conservation, gardening, travel& books. Ginny lived a full life, loved much & will be missed

ginny and i spent a summer afternoon together at my farm in anderson county ky a few years ago. her husband wendell is on the kentucky natural lands trust board. my husband hugh archer is the executive director. the board was meeting inside. we pulled up a couple chairs on the porch near the big platform feeder that the birds like best. the weather was beautiful with a slight breeze. i believe every bird that uses those feeders visited that afternoon. sans the pileated woodpeckers and orioles.

the board meeting went on and on as board meetings do. ginny and i spent several hours on the porch watching the birds come and go and do what they do. we took a couple breaks to refresh our iced tea.

we talked of many things, life, husbands, children, the environment, ky & national politics. wide ranging discussions. oh yes...and the birds. i learned things about the birds i see every day at my farm from her. ker love for and knowledge of ornithology was profound.

i'd never met her before that day. and after that day......i'll never forget her. she was an engaging, charming, intelligent, compassionate, deep, and lovely woman.

The sweetest voice one has ever heard will now sing with the angels and will always be in our hearts. Ginny's generous and gentle spirit graced Carlisle in countless ways, every day. She was a guide who led by example, opening our eyes to the natural world, the needs of humankind locally and globally, and the confident competence girl scouts could attain. She was and remains an inspiration.

Ginny blessed our lives in many, many ways. She was like a mother to us, and a grandmother to our children. She and Wendell supported us as we started our professional life in Carlisle. She taught us the love of birding, and led us on adventures into the wilderness. We watched Haley's comet with her one winter night. We love you Ginny, and thank God for you!

A strong light has left this world. I admired Ginny like few people I've ever met, with her wonderful care for people, family, community, and nature. I'm so sorry for your loss, Wendell, Rob, Barbara & Ann, and for Carlisle's loss, too. I'm praying that the God of all comfort and delightful memories will sustain you all.
