Robert Mayo Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home - East Louisville on Mar. 31, 2026.
Robert "Bob" Howard Mayo, Sr., Louisville, KY, passed away on March 28, 2026, after a long struggle with Parkinson's. He was 91 years old. Bob was born on October 15, 1934, in Marion County, Kentucky to Goebel and Ora Gladys Bennett Mayo.

Robert Mayo was a graduate of Lebanon High School and the University of Kentucky with a B.S. degree in Agri-Business. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army. In his early career, he was a regional manager for Kerr-McGee Chemical Corporation, a job which took him and his young family to Hopkinsville, Ky. In Hopkinsville, Bob was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. He became a Realtor-Broker and appraiser. Among his many civic activities, Bob served as president and director for the Hopkinsville Board of Realtors and as Kiwanis Club President. He was also a director and Founder of Pennyrile Citizens Bank. He was a regular at Roundies Café and loved the camaraderie of the other men who gathered there.

In 1996, Bob moved to Louisville, KY, to be near his 4 grandchildren and, incidentally, their parents. He devotedly cheered them on at their ice hockey, cross country and field hockey games as well as ballet recitals. Affectionately called GranGran, his grandchildren fondly remember trips to Disney World and Alaska fishing trips with him. Dressed in their princess dresses, his granddaughters were given horse-drawn carriage rides around Anchorage by their GranGran. When he was not with his grandchildren, Bob enjoyed horseback riding through the trails of Anchorage and carriage riding. His friends in the horse community were some of his favorites. He especially loved riding his tractor and mowing the grass of his 5-acre lot, an activity that he dearly missed when Parkinson's took its toll. He was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Spokes and Spurs and the Carriage Association of America.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, Robert "Robbie" Howard Mayo, Jr., and siblings Catherine Goodin, G.L. Mayo, Frank "Sonny" Mayo, and Leon Mayo. He is also preceded in death by his loving partner, Ingun Silverman.

Bob is survived by a daughter, Rebecca (Michael) Brodarick, grandchildren Michael Ryan Brodarick, Matthew Brodarick, Ashley Brodarick Lobo (Kevin) and Ann Marie Brodarick; great-granddaughters Genevieve Brodarick, Frances Lobo, and Rosalee Lobo, a brother Charles Marshall (Leannah) Mayo, a sister-in-law, Mary Kay Mayo, and many nieces and nephews.

The visitation will take place on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, 10:00 am in the Narthex of St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 6500 St. Bernadette Avenue, Prospect, Kentucky. The visitation will be followed by the Funeral Mass at 11:00 am. Burial will take place at 3:00 pm at St. Augustine Cemetery, St. Mary's Road, Lebanon, Kentucky.

The family of Robert Mayo is grateful for the care he received over the years at Robley Rex VA Medical Center, from Hosparus Health Louisville and The Springs at Oldham Reserve. Memorial contributions may be made to the Standardbred Retirement Foundation or Hosparus Health of Louisville.
