Mildred Berkey Obituary

Berkey, Mildred

Mildred H. Berkey, 93, Kewaunee, peacefully passed into eternal life on Wednesday June 4, 2014 at Paradise Estates Assisted Living, Kewaunee, WI. Millie was born on February 18, 1921 in St. Nazianz, WI in the home of her parents, the late William and Minnie (Gutman) Dietrich.

She grew up in St. Nazianz, attended St. Gregory's Grade School and graduated from Valders High School with the Class of 1938. After high school, she worked at the Salvatorian Fathers Publishing Dept. in St. Nazianz. In 1943, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served her country during World War II. She attained the rating of Yeoman Class and was stationed at the Bureau of Yards and Docks in Washington, D.C. and Arlington, VA. On October 27, 1945, she married Alfred Berkey at St. Peter's Church in Washington, D.C. Her husband was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran recently returned from the war in the Pacific.

Following World War II, they resided in Chicago for 6 years before returning to her husband's hometown of Kewaunee, WI, where they raised 3 sons and lived for the remainder of their lives. Millie worked for the Slatky and Wolske Law Firm in Kewaunee as a legal secretary before retiring in 1986. She and her husband enjoyed the company of a wide circle of relatives and friends. Many happy hours were spent playing cards, golf, dancing and dining out. They enjoyed traveling and made many trips and cruises throughout the U.S. and Europe. Millie had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing around her home and in her church choir. She was a proud and supportive mother and grandmother, following her sons' and grand children's scouting, athletic, musical and artistic activities throughout their school years and careers. Late in life, she took up oil painting as a hobby and many beautiful landscapes and portraits adorn the homes of friends and family.

Millie was a member of American Legion Post 29 and the Legion Auxiliary in Kewaunee. She was a longtime member of Holy Rosary Parish, the church choir and a number of church organizations. Her deep faith, her family and her husband of 64 years were the greatest treasures in her life.

She is survived by two sons, Bill Berkey (Paula Murray), Green Bay and Steve Berkey, Plantation, FL, three grandchildren, Brian Berkey and Jennifer Berkey, Kewaunee, Karissa Berkey, Coral Springs, FL, a sister, Loretta Sacharski, Chicago, brother and sister-in-law Hal and Mary Dietrich, Brillion, sister-in-law Beatrice Pritzl (Cal), Kiel, many nieces and nephews, special friends of the family Bonnie Berkey and Renee Berkey. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Al Berkey, one son, David Berkey, brother Norb Dietrich, brother and sister-in-law Walter and Elleen Dietrich, sister and brother-in-law Jean and Mike Russnak, brother-in-law Jim Sacharski, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Dorothy and Richard Helbick.

Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Monday, June 9 at Holy Rosary Church, Kewaunee until the time of services. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. William Swichtenberg at 11:00 a.m. Burial with full military rites will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery.

So sorry for your loss to you and your family Bill. She sounded like quite a wonderful woman. You probably don't remember, but when you used to greet me at AMS in the morning, I would say "Good morning William" and you had told me the only other person who got away with calling you William was your mother. I guess I should be honored. Take care.

Psalms 90:10 says: “The span of our life is 70 years, Or 80 if one is especially strong”. Ms Mildred certainly exceeded both. That makes her a Mighyt woman
