Charles Lawson Obituary

KINSTON - Mr. Charles Lawson of 418 N. Secrest St. died on Monday, August 27, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services will held at noon Saturday, September 1, 2012, at United American F.W.B. Tabernacle with the Rev. Johnnie Lawson officiating. Burial will follow in the Southview Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Eula L. Lawson of the home; one daughter, Angela R. Lawson of Kinston; two sisters, Deloris Bunch of Kinston and Mary Hardy of Raleigh; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, August 31, 2012, from the Robert Swinson Jr. Memorial Chapel. Arrangements are by Swinson Funeral Service. Sign the guest book at kinston.com. Family...I met Charles in Vietnam in 1971. Phu Cat Air Base where we were each assigned as Security Police..he was one of only two Black guys who were highly trained K-9 handlers. One had to be unafraid of most things to do his job, alone with a dog, in the Black of night, rain, mud, bugs, snakes and the sneaky enemy. I never recall seeing Charles without a smile on his face. That wasn't easy given how dangerous of a job he performed, and the ever present danger of being killed or seriously injured. I have been on a mission to find men I served with and it can be joy and/or sadness when the results come back. I was deeply saddened upon discovering Lawson had passed away..12 years ago. The crazy part? My company, Alside, has a window plant in Kinston that I visited many times. I always said that I would try to find him one day when I came and had more time. Just know that he was a good man. Well liked and respected by the brother's who served with him. He wasn't much of a talker, but that smile said it all. Sincere condolences from a comrade in arms from Pinehurst NC. RIP my brother.

Eula, I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your husband. I know how painful this must be for you. Eula I know first hand just how much the two of you loved one another. Eula, this is such a heartfelt tragedy for you to endure. I'm searching for words to comfort you, but I'm at such a lost. As I force a smile through the tears of sorrow I have to remember my vision as I viewed your relationship with your husband I witness a relationship equipped with the touching hands hands of God. Charles always had the ability to greet people in passing with his famous smile, a smile that warmed our hearts and influenced our day. What a blessing that God chose you to be his woman, his wife, the love of his life until his life ended...I know that Charles died a happy man, because I know just how much he loved you.
