Shirley Loughney Obituary

Shirley Loughney

Port Orchard, WA

June 29, 1950 to July 16, 2018

Shirley Loughney, 68, died in her home the morning of July 16th surrounded by family after a rapid decline from Merkel Cell Carcinoma. She was a kind, generous, and hilarious lady with a beautiful smile who loved spending time around the campfire, walking in the mountains, and laughing with loved ones. She was born on June 29th, 1950 in Midland, Michigan to Grant and Stella Williams and is the middle of eight siblings.

Shirley worked as a chemist at Dow Chemical before moving to Port Orchard in 2006. She worked as a contractor for the EPA until January 2017, testing water and soil quality at Superfund Sites. Shirley loved to cook, go camping, and be outdoors.

She is survived by her three children: Valerie Loughney Stapleton, Tom Loughney, and Stephanie Loughney and her beloved granddaughter, Stella Stapleton.

She unconditionally loved so many people and sparked deep and long-lasting friendships; there are many groups of friends who will be missing their anchor. Shirley loved to bring folks together, especially in the summer around her Dutch Oven Dinners.

Shirley always saw the beauty in everything and was an unconditional optimist. The world was a better place with her in it. In the two weeks before she died, she had time to speak with many of her family and friends. Along with her farewells, she encouraged everyone to "Love Always".

A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 am on Friday, July 20th at the Torpedo Shelter at Manchester State Park. Her ashes will be scattered at Mt. Rainier and off the shores of Oahu at a later date.

It has been 5 years and I still miss her. My friends say the same thing. Her memory remains; we loved her so.

It has been 2 years. The friendship circles that Shirley birthed have grown and flowered. Each time I get together with the friends she introduced to me, we tell each other how much we miss her and how strong her influence remains. We love you, Shirley. Carol

I was very sorry to hear from my mother about the passing of Shirley, better known to me as "Tom's mom." I remember she always went out of her way to notice me and share a kind word when us kids were over at her house to play. She always let the place be the hub of activity for us. I ran into her a few years back and she was consoling ME over the loss of my brother who had recently passed. It was my privilege to know her.
Our true condolences to her loved ones, especially Tom, in this time.
