A light in many lives, Margaret Tyler "Peggie" Johnson Brooks, passed away at her home in Longmont, CO on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, after a twenty-year struggle with breast cancer, surrounded by loving family and friends. Peggie was born in Cleveland, OH, on February 3, 1956 to James White and Anne Curtis Johnson.

Peggie was a proud graduate of the Webb School of Knoxville in 1974 and the University of Tennessee in 1978. While at UT, Peggie studied Graphic and Communication Design; was a member of the Women's Swimming and Diving Team; and a member of Chi Omega sorority. In 1988, Peggie moved to Colorado. She received her Teaching Certificate from Regis University in 2005. Peggie was enthusiastically involved with a myriad of activities in both her leisure and professional life, and she influenced every life she touched. She was employed by St. John the Baptist Catholic School from 1998-2007 where she taught P.E. and Health for grades K-8. In addition, Peggie was the Kids Camp Director at Longmont Athletic Club, Rocky Mountain Christian Church, St. John Catholic School, and Summer Program Director for Alexander Dawson School. After retirement, Peggie continued to volunteer at Alexander Dawson School as a substitute teacher. Peggie was also a Victim's Advocate with the Longmont Police Department from 2013 to present, volunteer work that remained close to her heart. Peggie pursued her love of sports and outdoor activities as a fitness instructor for the last 25 years. She was active in all types of group fitness and excelled as a swimming instructor. As a passionate tennis player, Peggie played in numerous leagues, connected with an active community, and met her loving husband on the court.

Survivors include her mother, Anne Curtis Johnson of Knoxville; her husband, Jere Barto of Longmont, CO, whom she married in 2009; daughter, Alexandra Anne Brooks, of Boulder, CO; siblings, Lucy Johnson Neiman and her husband Paul of Rye, NH; Jamie Johnson and his wife Tammy, and Andy Johnson and his wife Jennie, both of Knoxville; as well as numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Peggie was preceded in death by her son, John Thomas Brooks, and her father, James White Johnson.

A Celebration of Life will be held 2:00pm, Friday, November, 24, 2017 at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel, 6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, The Rev. Bo Townsend officiating. The family will receive friends in the Parlor immediately following.

I am saddened to learn of Peggy's passing. I knew Peggy as a kid at Cherokee, and we swam at UT together. She was such a fun and funny person, and brought light wherever she went. Condolences and best wishes to her family.
