Nancy Hare Obituary
Nancy Lodimah Hare, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and faithful servant of Christ, passed away on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the age of 89.
She was born on October 15, 1935, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Charles and Margaret Jones, and spent her early childhood in Sioux City, Iowa, before her family returned to northwest Missouri. On April 14, 1956, she married William A. "Bill" Hare, beginning a devoted marriage that lasted nearly 58 years until his passing in 2014. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, and service to their community.
Nancy's early work included scooping ice cream at Hanner Grocery in Fillmore and serving as an administrative assistant for the Presbyterian Church in St. Joseph. While she later worked at Home Bank in Savannah and as executive secretary at the American Angus Association, much of her life's energy was poured into raising her children, helping Bill on the family farm, and faithfully supporting his long career as Andrew County Collector. She was a trusted hand in the collector's office throughout his 32 years of service.
Nancy carried herself with quiet dignity and poise, yet always with humility. She was a picture of beauty, grace, and wisdom flowing from her deep faith. Family, friends, and neighbors often turned to her for a listening ear, steady counsel, and sincere encouragement.
Her devotion to Christ and His church shaped every season of her life. Nancy and Bill were instrumental in sustaining the Fillmore Christian Church when it faced closure in the early 2000s, giving generously of their resources and time to keep its doors open. She taught Sunday school for many years, welcomed generations of neighbors and friends into her home for large Sunday dinners, and served as a matriarch of her faith family.
She was also gifted with her hands and her mind. Nancy was a skilled seamstress who made countless garments, a remarkable cook who fed untold numbers around her table, and an excellent typist and communicator who kept correspondence alive with friends and community members. She delighted in word games and was famous among her grandchildren for beating them soundly-whether in UpWords, basketball, or any challenge they dared to bring her way.
Nancy was preceded in death by her father, Charles Jones (1978); her brother, C. Wakefield Jones (1992); her son, William Wakefield "Billy" Hare (2001); her mother, Margaret Jones (2006); her sister, Mary Rutherford (2007); and her husband, Bill (2014). She faithfully cared for many of her loved ones through their final days.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Schuster, and her husband, Roger, of Wichita, Kansas, along with their children: Lauren Kizer (Greg) of Omaha, Nebraska; Joe Schuster (Katie) of Dallas, Texas; and Samantha Hanlon (Conner) of Prairie Village, Kansas. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Trudy Hare-Gay (Robert Gay) of Fillmore, Missouri, and her late son Billy's children: Erica Wheeler (Joe) of Fillmore, Jessica French (John) of Liberty, and Wakefield Hare (Sara) of Savannah. In addition, Nancy leaves behind 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Nancy's family, friends, and community will remember her for her steadfast faith, her quiet strength, her humility, and her love of family. She leaves behind a legacy not only of service and care but of example-pointing all who knew her toward Christ.
Services will be 10:00am Tuesday, August 19, 2025 at Breit-Hawkins Funeral Home in Savannah, MO. Visitation and family receiving hour will be one hour prior to the service.
